Mr. Geil is a rising clergyman of the United Brethren church. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Burned to Death-- Mrs. D. A. Geil Meets a Horrible Death While Heating a Camphor Bottle, Which Explodes Setting Fire to Her Clothing-- An accident, the most appalling and horrible that has ever occurred in our city, dumbfounded our people Wednesday afternoon between four and five o'clock. Mrs. Carry Geil, wife of D. A. Geil was burned to death. She was at home alone, wishing to use some camphor and being unable to remove the glass stopper, she sat the bottle on the gasoline stove to heat it, when picking the bottle up, it exploded, throwing the contents over her clothing the vapor igniting from the burning jet of the stove, she was in a moment enveloped in flames. She ran to the folding bed and tried to secure a quilt in which to wrap herself to smother the fire, but she could not get the bed down, she saw if she stayed in the house it would be burned, ran out on the lawn where she threw herself down and by rolling over and tearing her burning clothing from her made a brave fight for her life, but to no avail. Her screams brought help but too late, when they carried her into the house every particle of clothing except about her loins was burned, her limbs being charred to her body. In fact here was not a spot on her except her face that was not burned. All that loving parents and friends could do was done to make her last hours easy. By the use of powerful opiates she was rendered free from pain and she was perfectly conscious to the end. With a fortitude that was the wonder of all, she accepted her fate and gave a concise description of the accident together with details of how she wished her children taken care of. She died at 2 o'clock Thursday morning. At her request the Eastern Star of which she was an honored member, will have charge of her funeral. One very sad feature is that her husband had gone, just the day before to Excelsior Springs, Missouri to take treatment for rheumatism and it was some time before he could be reached by wire, he is expected home today. Carry Josephine Baliman was born on her father's farm five miles south and west of this city, January 12, 1873, died at her home here September 15, 1904. Aged 31 years, 8 months and 3 days. She was married to D. A. Geil November 8, 1898, two children has been born to them. Lela aged 5 and Marion aged 3. Carry Baliman was among the first children born in this county and has lived here all her life. She was loved and respected by all. She had a wide acquaintance, having been a teacher in the schools of this county for a number of years. She was a perfect lady, kind and loving, true to her friends and exemplified by her every day life those womanly traits of character that endeared her to all who knew her. Because of our long acquaintance and our association with her as a teacher, words fail us, we cannot reduce to writing our feelings at this time.
