Spohn Riegel and David W. Riegel, was born December 13, 1895 in Liberty Township, Jackson County, Ohio and departed this life September 18, 1977, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 5 days. Her childhood years were spent in Liberty Township where she attended school. In her early youth she gave her life to Christ and became affiliated with the Buckeye Church, later transferring her membership to the Christ United Methodist Church of Jackson, where she attended faithfully as long as her health permitted. On December 6, 1922, she was united in marriage to Walter J. Johnson, and to this union were born two daughters, Carol Jean (Mrs. John E. Richards, Jr.) of Jackson, and Wilma (Mrs. John Hagely) of Columbus. She was a member of the Emma Palm Circle, United Methodist Women, the American legion Auxiliary and the Ugo-Igo Club. The last Sunday she was able to attend church she was among those of the "eighty and older" group who were given special recognition and presented pins. She had no sons, but her sons-in-law were as her own. Her grandchildren looked forward with eager anticipation to visits with grandma, who always had time to play a game or hear them tell about their various activities. Some of her happiest hours were spent in traveling with her grandchildren. Her kind disposition, out-going personality and other Christian virtues endeared people to her, and her memory will be cherished by the young and old. A wife, mother and grandmother like Carrie is more than a memory. She is a Living Presence. A person who so lived that she was able to go on, in a peaceful, quiet way, to another adventure, more wonderful and more beautiful than anything of which we can dream. She had been in failing health for the past few months, but facing the truth, accepted in in Faith giving thanks for all her blessings through the years, saying she would now take one day at a time. Her desire was to remain at home, and she was given professional care by her devoted family. The love and concern continued to be expressed to her during her last moments as the husband and daughters joined hands with her and assured her all was well and that she was in God's care. "But it is written, ye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of men, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him." Three sisters preceded her in death: A twin sister, Mrs. Clara C. Walters, Mrs. Emma Swingle and Miss Margaret Riegel. She is survived by her husband, Walter, two daughters, one sister, Almeda Stewart of Columbus, Ohio, six grandsons and one granddaugher, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
