Wednesday morning he received a telegram from Mr. John McPhilamey announcing the sudden death of his wife from apoplexy. Mrs. Couchman went to the barn with her little son Harold after coal, a few moments afterwards he mother, Mrs. Davis, heard Harold screaming and upon going out to see what was the matter found Mrs. Couchman lying on the floor dead, having fallen without uttering a word. The three older children were at school, and some of the neighborhood seeing something was wrong went over and carried her into the house, sending immediately for a physician. But it was too late, the death Angel had claimed her and the gentle spirit had taken its flight. Mrs. Couchman was a true christian woman, a loving wife and mother. Her maiden name was Carrie Davis, and she was born 36 years ago in Zanesville, Ohio, coming here with her husband some thirteen years ago. A husband, five motherless children, Mable, Clair, Charley, Harold and Earl and an aged mother and one brother, Chas. Davis living near Harveyville, are left to mourn her loss. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, Rev. N.D. Johnson officiating. The interment in the Burlingame cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family. The Burlingame Enterprise, Thursday, Nov. 21, 1895, page 2: Mrs. Carrie Couchman Mrs. Carrie Virginia Couchman, wife of L.M. Couchman, of this city, a brief notice of whose sudden and untimely demise appeared in last week's issue of this paper, was born at West Liberty, Ohio, on the 30th day of August, 1859, making her thirty-six years old at the time of her death. She came to Kansas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Davis, in February 1880, and resided on a farm near Auburn. On December 16th, 1880, she was married to L.M. Couchman, of West Liberty, Ohio, and returned with him to her old home. They resided there four years, returning to Burlingame in 1885, where Mr. Couchman found employment with the hardware firm of H.W. Filley & Son, and in whose employ he remained until about four years ago when he went on the road as a traveling salesman for the Harwi Hardware Company, of Atchison, Kansas. Five dear little children were born to them, Mabel, age 14, Clare, age 11, Charlie, age 8, Harold, age 5, and Earl, age 2, all of whom, together wil a kind and devoted husband and an aged mother are left to mourn her sad and sudden death, made doubly sad on account of the little ones who are left motherless. Mrs. Couchman commenced early in life to learn the teachings of Christ, so that she moght be able to meet the end in peace, and receive her just reward at the throne of the Almighty, in that grand and glorious Home beyond the River. She united with the Presbyterian church at the age of sixteen and continued to be an active, conscientious and consistent member up to the time of her death. She was also a worker in the Ladies' Guild, of the Presbyterian church, six member of which acted as pallbearers, Mesdames John McPhillamay, S.N. Hills, S. Armstrong, F.M. Nelsen, Oscar Thompson and H.D. Shepard. The funeral , which was one of the largest ever known in Burlingame, and which is but an illustration of the high esteem in which she was held by our people, took place at the Presbyterian church, Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. N.D. Johnson, officiating, taking for his text, Matthew 24-44: "Therefore be ye ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh," from which he preached an excellent sermon. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, among which was a cross of white chrysanthemums, smilax and roses from the Harwi Hardware Compant; an anchor of flowers from Charlie and Clair's school mates, and a sickle of white chrysanthemums and smilax with the word "Mama" on it was given by Miss mable's schoolmates. The casket was covered by beautiful flowers by the members of the Guild and the Christian and Junior Endeavors, and the altar and railing was bedecked with flowers by friends of the family. Mr. Couchman has been an active member in the I.O.O.F. Lodge of this city for a number of years and that body acted as an escort from the house to the church and from there to the grave. Mrs. Couchman was a noble specimen of her sex, and in her death this community has lost a good, true, good woman; the church an earnest and faithful worker; the husband a kind and affectionate wife; and the children have lost their all and all in this world --- a mother. The deepest sympathy of this entire community goes out to Mr. Couchman and the bereaved family.
