His body was discovered by postal employees Sam Rhatigan and Claude Appleby, who went to look for him when he failed to report to work. Carroll Edward Podhaski was born October 20, 1909, at Murdo, South Dakota, the son of Edward and Myrtle (Allen) Podhaski. He was married to Ruth Kasper of Anamosa on June 17, 1933, at Galena, Illinois and they made their home in Monticello their entire married life. He entered the postal service in 1930 and for the past thirty-two years has been engaged in Civil Service. In 1960, he left the city delivery to become a rural route mail carrier and held that position at the time of his death. He was a member of the Jones county Rural Mail carriers, and a graduate of the Monticello public schools with the class of 1927. Survivors include his wife Ruth and five daughters: Janice, Mrs. John Brokens; Joan, Mrs. Billie Barton, both of Monticello and Shirley, Sharon and Mary Ann, all at home. He is also survived by four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Pallbearers and honorary escort included the personnel of the Monticello Post Office.
