Redfern, 88, of Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday, September 7, 1993, at the home of his daughter, Nancy Thuma, 904 Sheaffer Drive, Mount Pleasant. Born March 25, 1905, near New London, he was the son of Ray and Hannah Broeker Redfern. He married Evea Fern Wasson on July 3, 1928. She died February 26, 1984. He attended Mount Union High School and was a graduate of Yarmouth High School and Iowa State College at Ames. Mr. Redfern had been a 50-year resident of Donnellson, serving as Lee County 4-H Club agent in 1930 and as county agricultural agent from 1933 until 1940. He then opened his real estate office, later adding tax and accounting services, was a hybrid seed corn district manager, and was the land maintenance supervisor for the Iowa Ordinance Plant when it started. He served on the Lee County Board of Review for 22 years, two terms as Lee County Representative in the Iowa Legislature for the 1965 and 1967 sessions, and for nearly 10 years as mayor of Donnellson. He had been a long-time member of the Lee County Fair Board, Farm Bureau, Lions and Donnellson Methodist Church. After moving to Mount Pleasant in 1979, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Mount Pleasant Lions Club and the Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Thuma of Mount Pleasant; a son, Merlin of Gainesville, Florida; a sister, Frances Hundt of Tremont, Illinois; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters. Open visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at Beatty Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant. There will be no family visitation. The funeral for Mr. Redfern will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Deb Kiesey officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery, Pleasant Grove. Memorials have been established for the Donnellson Public Library and the Mount Pleasant Rec Center.
