Description	:	Cassandra Spurgin, 1st wife of Presley LaForce is a bit of an enigma. Her first footprint is the record of their marriage in Bartholomew County, Indiana, on March 27, 1853. On the 1860 United States census she says she was born in Indiana. Her birth year would be about 1830. While living in Indiana in the early 1850’s, Presley, along with his brother Thomas Jefferson, had several land transactions. Presley had moved to Indiana by 1850 from Harrison County, Kentucky, where he was born on November 5, 1825. From Indiana, Presley and Cassandra moved to Iowa by 1855 and we find Cassandra in Mahaska County in the 1856 Iowa census and 1860 United States census. We also find her death date of July 21, 1860, on her tombstone in Bluff Creek Cemetery in Mahaska County, Iowa. This much we know about Cassandra. But who is Cassandra? Who are her parents? I have my suspicions and I hope someone reading this can connect the dots. Living near Presley and Cassandra in Iowa was 73 year old Aaron Spurgin, a widower, who in the 1860 census, gives his birth place as Canada. He came to Iowa from Bartholomew County after his wife, Ann (Moor), had died in Bartholomew County in 1855. Living with him is his widowed daughter Rachel [Thomas Hill], also born in Canada and a young boy of 18, William Spurgin(eon), born in Indiana. Aaron died in 1868 and is buried in Bluff Creek Cemetery in Mahaska County, Iowa, in a plot near Cassandra’s. Rachel Hill is also buried nearby. This Aaron Spurgin appears to be the son of William Spurgin, a loyalist, who at the time of the Revolutionary War, fled to Canada from North Carolina, became a citizen there and did not return to the United States, dying in Ontario in 1806. His two sons did return—Aaron and Samuel. William’s departure to Canada was somewhat scandalous—he left his wife, Mary Jane (Welborn or Sellers,) and family, then met and married Ann Bedsaul Reddick/Ruddick, wife of Solomon Ruddick. She also left her family behind. In Canada, William and Ann had four children together—two sons and two daughters. Is Aaron Spurgin, son of William, Cassandra’s father? There is no trace of Cassandra in the 1850 census, she is never listed as one of his children in any genealogy research—but there has to be some connection or they would not have moved about the same time and been living so close to each other. She and Presley also named their first child William—there are no Williams in the LaForce family. The other possible candidates for Cassandra’s parents are William’s other son—Samuel, who died in 1849 in Bartholomew County, and his wife Mary “Polly” McFall who died in Story County, Iowa where her daughter Nancy Jane McCain was living. She and Samuel were married in 1824 in Bartholomew County. Mary “Polly” was born in Harrison County, Kentucky as was Presley LaForce. In another unintended connection, Presley and Lucinda were married in Bartholomew County by Justice of the Peace Jesse Ruddick. He is the son of Solomon Ruddick and Ann Bedsaul Ruddick Spurgin, and therefore is he a cousin of Cassandra’s? Donna Kuhlman (Bartholomew County Genealogist) says Solomon and the children moved west to Indiana where they would have joined their step siblings; William’ Spurgin’s second family with, Ann, their mother. Donna also says Ann returned to the United States joining the family in Indiana and dying there in 1824. Thanks to the researchers out there who have shared the above information—here’s hoping someone can make the firm connection for Cassandra’s parents.
