THIS IS THE PART OF THE HISTORY PROGRAM THAT WAS DONE THANKSGIVING DAY 26 NOV 1998 AT THE MORGAN DINNER. I am Cassius Homer Morgan (called Homer) born March 28, 1845. I went one term to Merom Union Christian College. After attending College, I taught in the local school as did my first wife, Ophelia Jane Trueblood. Rumor has it that when I bought my homestead, the house was half finished. The man building the house was also seeing Ophelia Trueblood. I bought the property and also got the girl. We got married in 1865 when I was 20 and I started clearing land. We had 4 children: Lora, Lula, Cassius Ray and Fred Barr. Ophelia died of fever or congestion of the brain. I then married Nancy Malita Gilcrease (Lida) of Youngstown, IN. We had 7 children: Everett (died at 6 from diphtheria), John Ogle, Herman, Ira, Harry Walker, Hazel Belle, and Harvey Ernest. I am handsome, stern-looking, and dark-haired. I always have a mustache and a beard. In my one term of College, I obtained a smattering of law in addition to other things. I have a set of law books inscribed with my name in gold which I keep in my old secretary desk. Among the farmers and neighbors, I am considered an authority to whom they bring their small problems for assistance. I am a great believer in Masonry and see to it that all my sons become Masons and pay their fees to join. Together with my father, Valentine, I operate a general store in Middletown. We sell glass, queensware, looking glasses, refrigerators, ice cream freezers, bird cages, fruit jars, jelly cups, lamps and chandeliers, water coolers and clocks. I am very interested in soil conservation, drainage, and cooperative marketing, I am very active in the Grange. I am on the agricultural staff of Purdue and travel from county to county lecturing on drainage, soil conservation and marketing. I am considered THE authority on drainage. I also engage in buying and selling cattle and stock. I am a Republican and when I was 47, served one term in the Indiana State Legislature (like my Uncle Dick Thompson Morgan). There is a picture of my Congressional Class of 1897 in the back of this room. Being interested in drainage, I built a kiln a distance north of my homestead. I manufactured clay drain tiles and bricks. To supply the water, a deep well was dug and two ponds were made. Tragedy struck in 1895. While working at the kiln, my sons Fred Barr, Cassius Ray and my son-in-law, Marshall Bentley contracted typhoid fever. Fred Barr and Marshall Bentley died. Cassius Ray - almost. I filled in the well and abandoned the project. I have been hearing a story circulating about me that I was kicked out of church because I "had a dance". Let me tell you what happened: My father, Valentine, was a founder of the Christian Church at Middletown, IN. He was also a deacon and elder and my family was very devout and sincere. The church at that time did not approve of any music and was very strict. I had disapproved severely of the young people's kissing parties and so I decided to invite all the young people to dance at my house where I could keep an eye on them. We would clear the furniture out of the dining room, parlor, and sometimes even the kitchen. One Sunday, at church, a member rose and denounced me, saying I was hypocritical. I rose from my seat, said my own piece in no uncertain terms and marched out. I was later asked to return, but my stiff-necked pride and conviction that my form of entertainment was better than kissing games kept me from doing so. I did attend sometimes with my son Cassius Ray and his wife after my wife died. In 1926, I went to Pittsburgh to visit Belle. I suffered a severe heart attack and all the sons were sent for. I was outraged and not very cordial when they arrived. I was bedfast until one day I decided I was going home. Belle tried to change my mind - the Dr. said I wouldn't live through the trip. Cassius Ray was sent for and arrived but couldn't dissuade me. I died at home on May 20, 1927. Let me introduce you to my second wife, Lyda.
