McEwen, a well known resident of this community who had made her home in Holyoke 44 years, passed away Wednesday morning of last week. She was 79 years old. Mrs. McEwen had started to church Sunday morning but became ill and returned to her home She then spent the afternoon with Mrs. Nelly Wilson, who noticed her increasing illness and notified Mrs. McEwen's son, T.R. McEwen, in Denver. Mr. McEwen came to Holyoke as soon as possible. His mother seemed sufficiently improved for the two of them to start to Denver, where it was expected the family would be together for Thanksgiving as was their annual custom. However, Mrs. McEwen was stricken while riding in the car near Fleming and was rushed back to the Phillips County hospital here. Mrs. Guy Stovall of Denver, formerly Louise McEwen and Mrs. T.R. McEwen arrived in Holyoke Monday afternoon and were with the elder Mrs. McEwen at the time of her death. Mrs. Guy D. Barnett, the former Josephine McEwen, of Oregon City, Oregon, arrived here early Wednesday morning. These and other relatives and friends returned to their homes following the funeral. Others from out of town included Mrs. Ethel Austin, Crawford, Nebraska, Mrs. and Mrs. Paul McDill, White City, South Dakota; Harry McDill, Brush, Guy D. Barnett, Oregon City, Oregon; Robert Barnett, San Francisco, California; two nieces from Denver and friends. Mrs. McEwen, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McDill, was born March 7, 1875, in Emerson, Iowa. She grew to womanhood there and received her higher education at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. A few years ago she received recognition as a 50-year alumnus of that school. In 1896, she was united in marriage to Joseph W. McEwen at Emerson, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. McEwen moved to Holyoke in 1910 and the family home had been here since that time. Mr. McEwen, who passed away in 1935, was the CB & Q station agent here for a number of years and Mrs. McEwen, also a telegrapher, assisted him much of the time. She had operated a rooming house the last several years. Mrs. McEwen united with the Presbyterian church in Iowa in early life. After moving to Holyoke she transferred her membership to the local Methodist church and remained a faithful member of that church. Mrs. McEwen was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are one son, T.R. McEwen, Denver; two daughters, Mrs. Guy D. Barnett, Oregon City, Oregon, and Mrs. Guy Stovall, Denver; one grandson, Robert McEwen Barnett, Palo Alto, California; two step-children, Ralph McEwen, Greeley, and Miss Rosalind McEwen of Illinois; four brothers, Harry McDill, Brush, Colorado, John McDill, Denver, Paul McDill, White River, South Dakota, and Wils McDill, Mound City, Kansas; three sisters, Mrs. Frances Wuttke, Mound City, Kansas, Mrs. Anna McClain, Eugene, Oregon, and Mrs. Ethel Austin, Crawford, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews. The Enterprise has been informed that Mrs. McEwen's property will continue to be operated in the same way she had maintained it with a manager in charge.
