Read More	Contributed by Donna Creaser Harwood: USEFUL LIFE ENDS Mrs. Katherine Shank Enters Upon Her Last Sleep WAS PIONEER OF WAPELLO COUNTY Has Lingered Near Death's Door For Many Weeks -- I Survived by Five Children After a residence of fifty years in the county Mrs. Katherine Shank passed away this morning at her home one half mile east of the city, at the age of 88 years. The deceased had been near death's door for a number of weeks and her demise had been hourly expected. A few evenings ago while a number of the neighboring women were at the bedside of the dying woman, she was seen to gasp and to stop breathing. The neighbors thought that Mrs. Shank had breathed her last and left for home. A few minutes later, however, signs of returning consciousness were seen and from that time until her death this morning, the aged woman's recovery was seen to have been impossible. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m., from the residence. The interment will be in Round Point cemetery. Rev. D.C. Bevan, pastor of the Main street M.E. church will conduct the services. FIVE CHILDREN SURVIVE Mrs. Katherine Shank, widow of Conrad Shank, was born in Bavaria, Germany, February 20, 1814. The deceased came to this county with her husband and family in 1848 and settled on the farm on which she died. Mr. Shank in company with Thomas Devin and others went to California during the gold fever and in 1850 he died in that country. Five children survive to mourn the death of their late parent: Mrs. Susan Knox, who resides on Woodland avenue in this city; Mrs. Rebecca Bitteroff of Omaha; Mrs. Mary Magee who resides near Agency, Conrad Shank Jr., who resides one mile and a half east of Agency and Henry Shank, who has always lived with and cared for his mother, he having never married. REMEMBERED BY OLDER RESIDENTS The deceased will be remembered only by the older residents. She lived a quiet retired life after the struggle incident to the early pioneers in bringing up a large family in a new country. She was a rugged sturdy woman and had never employed a doctor; her death was simply a sleep after ninety years of joy and sorrow. --The Ottumwa Daily Courier-- --Tuesday, January 15, 1903, pg 5--
