Mrs. Eshelman had been very poorly and almost helpless for the past two years and had been cared for at the hospital most of the time. Death has claimed another of our respected and well known pioneers of the state and Polk county in the death of Mrs. Catherine Eshelman, who died on December 31, 1913. Mrs. Eshelman had been very poorly and almost helpless for the past two years and had been cared for at the hospital most of the time. The remains were brought back to her old home where the funeral was held. Mrs. Eshelman came to Iowa in 1868 locating on the bare bleak prairies northeast of Altoona, where with her husband she worked and converted the prairie land into one of the best and most comfortable homes in the county. Catherine Kensinger was born in Bedford county, Pennslyvania, September 24, 1837. United in marriage to Jacob D. Eshelman March 3, 1858, who died June 3, 1896. In 1859 they moved to Ogle county, Illinois and lived there until the spring of 1868 when they moved to the old home in Iowa. Eleven children were born to them Mary, Emmaril, Nancy, Jacob, John, Oliver and Susan(missing) the four deceased Katie, Andrew, Samuel and Willie. She united with the German Baptist church in January 1859 of which she was a consistent member until death. She was stricken with paralysis June 1911 from which she never recovered. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. M. Goughnour at the home January 2, 1914, after which the remains were laid to rest beside her husband and two children in the Altoona cemetery.
