Catherine Ann Fischer, known as Catherine by family and Cathy by friends, was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 18, 1938; days preceding a record-breaking hurricane making landfall in New York. She was the only child born to her loving parents, John and Nancy Caputo. After earning her high school diploma, she moved to Long Island and embarked on a career in the New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She was the only child born to her loving parents, John and Nancy Caputo. After earning her high school diploma, she moved to Long Island and embarked on a career in the New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator. It was within this organization that she met and fell in love with Cornelius (Bud) Fischer. The two were married in 1976 when Catherine was 38. She retired from the telephone company upon learning that the couple was carrying their only child, Carina. However, despite retirement, Catherine reinvented herself as a home baker and created a small, but successful business, Custom Cakes by Cathy. Her cakes were deliciously baked to order to celebrate countless birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings at nearby country clubs and prestigious Manhattan venues. Her cakes were renowned in the area to be both delicious and beautiful and her business flourished by reputation. In 2004, Bud and Catherine relocated to Middletown, DE to enjoy true retired life. Catherine’s creativity was not isolated to baking. She possessed artistic talents in painting with oils, pastels, and colored pencils, jewelry-making, and card crafting. Typically, an energetic, feisty woman, and regardless of health problems, she was a devoted mother and friend taking whatever opportunity available to go on an “adventure”, provide a listening ear, or a hot meal (usually followed by dessert). She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and leaves behind her daughter and three grandchildren: Carson, Vivian, and Asher Decremer. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday October 21st at 11:30 am at St. Joseph’s Parish, 371 E. Main Street, Middletown, DE 19709. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
