Born May 6, 1917 to Alfred Robinson Bowden and Lillian Henderson Bowden, Catherine grew up in Blades where her father once served as Mayor. Read More	CATHERINE SMITH Catherine Adella Bowden Smith Age 92, of Seaford, passed away peacefully on November 9, surrounded by family, at the home of her daughter. Born May 6, 1917 to Alfred Robinson Bowden and Lillian Henderson Bowden, Catherine grew up in Blades where her father once served as Mayor. She was an A student and a 1935 graduate of Seaford High School, set to attend Duke University, eloping instead with her high school sweetheart, John (Jack) Sheppard Smith, Jr., formerly of Salisbury, and twin son of the owner of the former Seaford ShipYard. After the death of her husband of 47 years in 1982, she traveled to Europe and to the Brittany-Normandy Cemetery to find the memorial of her only brother, Dallas, who was drafted while attending Indiana University and killed in World War II, a loss that affected her deeply. Catherine was a life-long, and active, member of Blades United Methodist Church, where she served as Communion Steward, and headed the distribution of charity baskets. She was on the committee for World Day of Prayer, and was a member of United Methodist Women. She also served as a member of Nanticoke Hospital Auxiliary. Catherine leaves behind a family she dearly loved; two sons, Jerald S. Smith of Seaford; Kenneth E. Smith, and wife Nancy, of Strasburg, PA; two daughters, Sandra S. Madwar, and husband, David, of Columbus, OH; and Cindy Lyons Taylor, and husband Jeff of Seaford; grandchildren, Carmen Roth, Candy Friedhofer, and Kenny Smith II of PA; Tracy Higginbothem of IN; Alex Scull of CA; Jerry Smith, Jr. of W.V.; Laurie Lyons Lewis of PA; David Smith, Beth Moyer, Kim Lyons, and Aaron Lyons of Seaford; and a sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Irvin Johnson of Seaford. She is also survived by a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Bill MacMinn of FL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Alfred Bowden, adopted by the family as a son after the death of Dallas; three grandchildren, Donna Hubbard of TN, John Carmine of OH, and Michael Smith of FL; and two sisters, Helen Long of New Castle; and Lina Seeger of N.Y.; her husband's twin brother, Richard Smith of FL; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Brooks and Doris Marvel; Irma Dryden; and Fred and Louise Miles of Seaford. Funeral Services will be on Friday, November 13 at 2 PM at the Blades United Methodist Church, 306 S. Market St, Blades, DE. Friends may call at the CRANSTON FUNERAL HOME, 300 Shipley St, Seaford, on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM and on Friday at church from 1 to 2. Burial will be in Blades Cemetery.
