Price (John Benjamin Price) in Berrien County Michigan. -------------- John B. Price was born Feb. 1, 1827, in Ohio. --- An article on their son Benjamin F. Price, states that John Price was a farmer all his life, and he descended from Welsh-Irish stock. -------------------- Note: Their son Benjamin's obituary, incorrectly states that his mother died "about" 1875 near Newport, Calhoun County Arkansas (where the family had lived for about one year, before returning to Michigan), but it "should" have said that it was his father John B. Price, who died about 1875, near Newport, Arkansas. Their youngest son Charles applied for John's pension, in which he also states that John B. Price died in Newport, Calhoun County Arkansas. Price had lived with their children in Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan, and in Royalton township (St. Joseph Post Office), Berrien County Michigan. -------------------------- Catherine's husband John B. Price, age 38, (from Royalton Township, Berrien County Michigan), served in the Civil War, in Company D, 15th Michigan Infantry. ---------------------------------- The seven known children of John B. Price and Catherine C. Hines are: ---- 1. Christopher SEYMOUR Price. b. May 17, 1854, in Berrien Co. MI. m. Sarah Dalrimple [Dalrymple], on Aug. 21, 1880, in Galien, Berrien Co. MI. d. Aug. 25, 1925, in Dowagic, Cass Co. MI. Children: Charles L. Price, and William S. Price (1886-1941). Christopher had lived in: Galien, in Berrien Co. MI., and in Pokagon, and Dowagic, in Cass County Michigan. ------------------------------ 2. Nathan Arthur ("Nate") Price. b. April 17, 1856. m. July 17, 1881, to Louisa ("Louie") E. Kelly (1865-1938), the daughter of Samuel L. Kelly and his wife Emma Jane Blunt. d. Nov. 20, 1911, at the age of 55 years, 7 months, and 3 days, on Front Street, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan (per his death certificate). He had lived in: Berrien Co. MI, and in Cass County Michigan. Children: Mattie Christina Price, Fred C. Price, Elva May Price, Clara Dell Price, and Sadie Price. Buried: Smith's Chapel, Cass Co. MI (near his brother William), in Row 29, next to his wife Louie Price-Copp (1865-1938), his brother William, and son Fred C. Price (1890 - Apr. 4, 1959), and a Nina Price. See his death certificate at: www.seekingmichigan.org Note: Most of Niles, MI is in Berrien County, but the East side of Niles, Michigan, is in Cass County. (Louie later married a Mr. Copp). The obituary for Nathan A. Price was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper, in Niles, MI on Nov. 21, 1911, Page 1. ------------------------------- 3. Aurilla A. Price. b. Dec. 25, 1857. m. Records show that "Aurella" A. Price married Albert H. Kelley [also found as "Kelly"], on June 23, 1878, in Berrien County, MI. (marriage record # 3099). Note: Aurilla's mother died five months before, on Jan. 13, 1878. Acording to her brother Benjamin's obituary, "Aurilla Kelly" was still living in St. Joseph, Michigan (in Nov. of 1946), at the age of 90. She had broke her leg in her old age. d. June 30, 1956, in Eau Claire, MI. at the age of 98. Buried: Lakeside Cemetery, Lakeside, Berrien County Michigan. The obituary for "Mrs. Arpa Aurilla Kelley" was published in the "St. Joseph Herald Press" newspaper, in St. Joseph, Michigan, on June 30, 1956, page 4. Children: Theodore T., Bessie Christine, Gracie B., Blanche Reba, and Fannie Mae Kelley. She has lived in: Chickaming Twp., Berrien Co. MI., and in Cicero, Tipton Co. IN., Chicago, Cook Co. ILL., St. Joseph, Berrien Co. MI and Eau Claire, Berrien County Michigan. ----------------------------- 4. John ("Jack") Thompson Price. b. Feb. 28, 1860. m. Eliza Jane Starrett/Stewart, on Oct. 8, 1882, in Galien, Berrien County Michigan. She is the daughter of John Starrett and Lavina Finten. d. Dec. 24, 1926, in Niles, MI. Children: Benjamin F. Price (of Chicago), and Aurilla Rhoda (Price) Starke (Mrs. William Starke, of Niles, MI, who is buried in Forrest Lawn Cemetery, in Three Oaks, MI). He has lived in: Harris Twp. St. Joseph Co. Indiana, and in Berrien County Michigan. Obituary for John was published in the Niles Daily Star, on Friday, Dec. 24, 1926, page 4. ---------------------------- 5. Benjamin Franklin Price. b. Sept. 14, 1862, in Berrien County Michigan. When Ben was 13 [1875] they moved to Newport, Arkansas, where his father died and was buried. After living there for a year, they returned to Michigan. Ben went to Box Butte County Nebraska in 1885 [age 23], taking up a homestead 11 miles southwest of Hemingford, Nebraska. m. Sept. 24, 1890, to Luzella ("Zella") Best (who came from Berrien Co. MI., to Hemington, Nebraska to marry him), at the Nichols home, near Hemingford, in Box Butte County Nebraska. Luzella was the daughter of David Allen Best and his first wife Almira Lemon, of Berrien County Michigan. Luzella was one of 12 or 13 children. [See large article on David A. Best, in "Portrait and Biographical Record of Berrien and Cass Counties, Michigan", (1893), pages 732 and 733.] [The obituary for David A. Best was published in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan, on Sept. 28, 1899, page 4]. [See "David Allen Best" on "rootsweb"]. [David and Almira Best are buried in the Howe Cemetery, S. of Buchanan, MI.] d. Nov. 13, 1946, of a heart ailment, in St. Joseph's Hospital, in Alliance, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years, 1 month, and 29 days. Children: (Two sons): Gail Allen Price, and Merle J. Price, and two daughters, Bernadine, and Gayle Price. Buried: Hemingford Cemetery, in Hemingford, Box Butte County Nebraska. William S. Price. (William Sherman Price?) b. Feb. 8, 1865. Not married. d. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1886, in the Sabin House, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan, at the age of 21 years. He died of internal injuries, in the Sabin House, as the result of a horse and buggy accident with the Pike House omnibus, at the Niles train depot. An article about this accident was published in the "Niles Weekly Mirror" newspaper, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan, on Feb. 24, 1886, and in the "Buchanan Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan on Feb. 25, 1886, Page 5. Buried: Smith's Chapel, Cass County Michigan (near his brother Nathan). --------------------------- 7. Charles Price. (Charles Landon Price?) b. Feb. 23, 1868. m. Mea (May) Potter, in 1894. d. Dec. 19, 1938, in Galien, MI, at the age of 70. He lived and died in Galien, Berrien County Michigan. Children: Claude, Mable Jane (Mrs. Mable Seynold), Bernice A. (Mrs. Ernest May), and Ross Price. Buried: Galien Township Cemetery. Charles requested to receive his father's pension from the Civil War. The obituary for Charles, was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper, in Niles, MI on Tues. Dec. 20, 1938. ______________________________ The 1860 plat map of Buchanan township shows the family of J. B. Price living on the East side of the St. Joseph River in Section 13 (about one mile North of the village of Buchanan). The Dragoo families (Uel and John Fleming Dragoo Sr.), were living directly across the St. Joseph River (on the West side), in Section 14. ------------------------------- The 1860 census of Buchanan township lists: John Price age 33, farmer, wife Catherine age 23, Christopher age 6, Nathan B. age 4, Aurelia age 3, and John T. (infant). --------------------------------- The 1870 census of Royalton township, Berrien County Michigan (St. Joseph post office), lists: John Price farm labor age 43 born in Ohio, and his wife Catherine age 35 born in Michigan, Seymour (Christopher Seymour) age 15, Nathan age 14, Aurelia age 12, Thompson (John Thompson?) age 9, Benjamin age 6, William age 5, and Charles age 2. -------------------------------- The 1880 census of Chickaming township, Berrien County Michigan shows youngest son Charles Price age 11, being raised by his sister Aurelia age 22, and her husband Albert Kelley age 22. --- In the 1880 census, John and Catherine's son Benjamin, is living with the John and Laura Montaque family, in Buchanan, Michigan. -------------------------------- Catherine died on Jan 13, 1878, in Buchanan Township, Berrien County MI at the age of 41 years, 6 months and 7 days.
