Ranney was born in Westerville, Ohio, December 9, 1849, and died at 11:30 p. m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Catherine C. Ranney was born in Westerville, Ohio, December 9, 1849, and died at 11:30 p. m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Proctor, 2901 Jule Street, St. Joseph, Mo., at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 16 days. She spent her girlhood in her native city, coming to Iowa she was married to William T. Mathews June 23, 1874, who preceded her to the Great Beyond January 2, 1900. To this union was born two children, Minnie L. and Mary A. Mary A. only living to the age of one year and a half when God called her home. Mrs. Mathews and her daughter have never been seperated, living together as a united family, lovingly cared for by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Proctor, and her three grandchildren until half when God called her home. Mrs. Mathews was an active church worker, joining the Methodist Episcopal church early in life, she remained a true and loyal member of the same until her death. She was a member of the Sunday-school Bible class, an active worker in the Missionary Society and the Ladies' Aid up until about three years ago when her health forbade activity longer but though unable to work she kept up her membership and her interest never ceased. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Security Benefit Association. Mrs. Mathews was a true Christian woman, loyal always to her convictions of faith and duty, unselfish always, ever throwing self in the background that others might have more pleasure. Her love for her grandchildren was one of the greatest of loves. They to her were the World Beautiful. Gone but not forgotten. Ever will her words of counsel and her hope of immortality live, of which her well worn bible bears silent testimony to, as well as friends and neighbors, for all who knew her loved her, and she counted her friends by the people she knew. Mrs. Mathews leaves to mourn her loss her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Proctor, and son-in-law, J. P. Proctor, who accompanied her body here for burial, three grandchildren, Lewis Proctor age 17, Mary Lucille Proctor age 14, and Catherine C. Proctor age 7. Six step children by Mr. Mathews of whom Mrs. Harlet Snider of Weldon, Iowa was present. Also step grandchildren who knew her and loved her as grandma and by whom her memory will be held dear. Mrs. Mathews was stricken with uric acid poisoning March 24th and for awhile her life was despaired of. Mrs. Snider, of Weldon, came to help care for her and when she left her bedside she seemed much improved and hopes were held of her recovery but weakened by poor health of several years standing her system was in no shape to throw off disease. She succumbed to scarlet fever which was in the home at the time. Funeral services were held at the Hebron church on Friday morning, conducted by Rev. Larrick. The body was then laid to rest in the Hebron cemetery. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer.
