She died on the farm where she had lived for more than 60 years. She came to this country from Alsace-Lorraine in 1863. She was the daughter of John and Susanna (Becker) Smith. Mrs. Peiffer, then Catherine Smith worked at Blackhawk Mill after she came to this country. She was married to John Peiffer in 1866 and the couple began housekeeping on the farm where she spent her last years. They were the parents of 10 children, 6 of whom are still living. They include John, of Keota, Mrs. John Weber, of Sigourney, Mrs. Peter Schumann, of Moberly, Mo. and Frank, Anton and Christina at home. There are 3 brothers, Frank Smith, of Dubuque, Honnes Smith, of Harper and Anton Smith, of Sigourney, 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary Ludwig, of Harper and Mrs. Susanna Wickenkamp, of Richland.
