Read More	City Mourns Kitty O'Donnell Recycling Coordinator Dead At 48; Served City 24 Years By Jeff Mellott, News Record Staff Writer Harrisonburg officials are mourning the death of Catherine Lou "Kitty" O'Donnell, an employee of the city for 24 years and coordinator of Harrisonburg's recycling program. Ms. O'Donnell, 48, of Harrisonburg died Friday morning at her home as the result of complications from recent heart surgery. "It's sad. She was very excited about that recycling program. She seemed to be very well suited for that type of work," said City Manager Marvin B. Milam. Ms. O'Donnell joined the city in 1967 and worked in the planning department for many years as a clerk/typist. She advanced to assistant planner and also became the Litter Control Coordinator. "She was super at meeting the public. She could speak freely and well with anyone or everybody who had a question or concern," said Planning Director Robert J. Sullivan Jr. "She certainly was very helpful and knew a lot of the city operations and liked the city . . . and the people she was serving," Sullivan said. Last summer, Ms. O'Donnell was transferred to the Sanitation Department to take on duties as the new Recycling Coordinator. "The city has lost a real honest, hard-working, committed person, who believed strongly in her job tasks and performed them without flaw and with all kinds of enthusiasm. The city will be hardplaced to replace her," said Sanitation Department Superintendent John Holsten. Holsten credited Ms. O'Donnell for adapting the state's Adopt-A-Highway program to Harrisonburg's streets and creating an Adopt-A-Spot program to clean up vacant lots and other areas in the city. "I had great plans for her down the road as things progressed in that there would be more responsibility, but we never got to it," Holsten said. Ms. O'Donnell was born Oct. 8, 1942, in Clifton Forge, and was the daughter of the late Hugh and Hazel O'Donnell. Survivors are two sisters, Susan Shull of Hampton and Deborah Juliana of Harrisonburg; and one brother, H. Daniel O'Donnell of Harrisonburg. "Kitty" O'Donnell, 48, of 212 Governors Lane, Harrisonburg, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Father J . Kenneth Rush will conduct the service. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Ms. O'Donnell died May 24, 1991, at her home as a result of complications from recent heart surgery. She was born Oct. 8, 1942, in Clifton Forge and was a daughter of the late Hugh Daniel O'Donnell and Hazel Waggoner O'Donnell. She lived her early life in Clifton Forge. In 1945 she moved to Harrisonburg, where she had since lived. She graduated from Harrisonburg High School and attended James Madison University. She had worked for the city since Jan. 1967 and for the Harrisonburg Planning Commission for a number of years. In 1990 she was promoted to city recycling coordinator. During the years she had been a bridal consultant for Joseph Neys and a reader for the blind at WMRA radio station. She was a volunteer for WVPT television. Ms. O'Donnell was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she was lector and eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Pilot Club, where she was past president and lieutenant governor. Surviving are two sisters, Susan O'Donnell Shull of Newport News and Deborah O'Donnell Juliana of Harrisonburg; and one brother, H.D. "Danny" O'Donnell of Harrisonburg. A Christian wake was held Monday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Harrrisonburg Rescue Squad.
