Description	:	Catherine Ballard, 89, of the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown, died early Tuesday morning, December 20th, at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, January 6th, 2006, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Avenue West. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Born Catherine Mann on March 23rd, 1916, in Jefferson Township, Marshall County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Henry Clint and Clara (Halverson) Mann. She attended school in Laurel, Iowa in her formative years and enjoyed playing basketball. The family moved to Marshalltown when Catherine was a teenager where she graduated from Marshalltown High School. She married William (Bill) Buchan and had two children, Beverly and Dale. She later married Floyd (Sam) Ballard on September 18th, 1943 in Bethany, MO. Owning and operating cafes was what Catherine and her husband Sam did the majority of her work career. Together they opened up the café in the Deep Rock Truck Stop that was established in 1954. You could get good food, coffee and gas there 24 hrs. a day. Today, that café is known as Cecil's Café. The last café owned was Ballard's Café which was located south of Fisher and across the street from Arbies Feeds. This café was also started by Catherine and her husband. They did business there a number of years. Catherine is survived by her daughter Beverly Gelletly of Rochester, New York, son Dale Ballard of Marshalltown, step-daughters Wilma Huff of Garwin and Arlene Furrow of ________ Texas, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, _____ step-grandchildren, _____ step-great-grandchildren and _____ great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ballard spent the past two years of her life at the Villa del Sol Nursing Home. Her family is very appreciative of the excellent care she received from the nurses and staff. Some of the staff members were very instrumental in helping her adjust to her new environment. Her parents, a sister Stella and two brothers, Donald and Jess Mann as well as her husband Sam preceded her in death.
