Description	:	Catharine Marie Terpstra Schoenfelder Steckelberg came into the world on September 6, 1922 and departed it on January 2, 2014. Although she attended high school in Iowa, she was a lifelong SD resident. After high school graduation, she attended one year of college at Southern State Normal School in Springfield. Kate married "Duke" Francis Schoenfelder in 1944. The couple was married for 17 years until Duke passed away from cancer in 1960. Read More	Catharine Marie Terpstra Schoenfelder Steckelberg came into the world on September 6, 1922 and departed it on January 2, 2014. Although she attended high school in Iowa, she was a lifelong SD resident. After high school graduation, she attended one year of college at Southern State Normal School in Springfield. Kate married "Duke" Francis Schoenfelder in 1944. The couple was married for 17 years until Duke passed away from cancer in 1960. As a 38 year old widow, Kate was able to keep the family together somehow and provide for her 7 children. In 1965 Kate married Darwin Steckelberg and the pair were married until Darwin's death in 1994. Kate worked outside the home for much of her life but really came into her own when she and Darwin became one of the original owners and forces behind Flintstones' Bedrock City in Custer in the sixties. After spending a couple of summers in Custer to manage Flintstones, the Steckelberg's ended up leaving their longtime home in Chamberlain to reside in Custer. Without previous management experience, Kate was able to partner with her husband to manage the tourist attraction in a very successful way. Kate sincerely enjoyed her experiences at the Village and it was clear she had found her true vocation. Kate attended American Lutheran churches during her life until she could no longer get around. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, going to ladies' club and doing some volunteer work. As the mother of 8 children, Kate greatly enjoyed family time and holiday gatherings, too. She had a good sense of humor so laughter was often on the agenda, too. Kate is survived by 6 children: Nob (and Jan) Schoenfelder of Summerset; Annamae Blume of Custer; Jon (and Mona) Schoenfelder of Sheridan, WY.; Marian (and Jan) Schoenfelder of Rapid City; Deb (and Ron) Shattil of Oakland, CA.; and Dar (and Ann) Steckelberg, Jr. of Redmond, WA. Kate is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren, as well as beloved daughter-in-law, June Schoenfelder of Blackhawk. Kate was preceded in death by both husbands and a son, Richard Schoenfelder, and a daughter, Kathy Burkhart. The family will gather in private to celebrate her life. Kate's ashes will be buried with those of her two husbands in Chamberlain, next summer, when her family will gather for a celebration of her life.
