Please join in the Celebration of Kay's Life Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, SD. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake, SD. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer service with Rosary to follow on Friday, February 25, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Catherine Marie (Garrity) Pfeil was born March 27, 1935 to Arthur Andrew and Evelyn Marie (Anderson) Garrity in Pierre, SD. She was the 3rd of 10 children. Kay's dad passed away in 1955. Evelyn married William Rausch in 1963 and added 10 siblings. Kay's Catholic faith was very important to her and started at a young age. She was a pillar in the community sharing her faith with many. Her First Communion and Confirmation were celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church in Harrold, SD. Kay was very active in her local prayer group. Kay attended grades 1-12 at Harrold Consolidated School. She played trumpet in the school band from 5th-12th grade. She was in musical operettas, played basketball, and was a cheerleader. She graduated Valedictorian of her class. She was involved in 4-H where she learned to sew, cook, work with animals, can and make pies. In her adult years, Kay was a 4-H leader. In February of 1948, Kay's heart fell for a very handsome lad as he and his sister walked to meet the school bus. This handsome fellow is Robert "Bob" Pfeil. After high school graduation, Kay went to work at the capitol of South Dakota in Pierre. While Bob was in Texas working, he sent an engagement ring home to his mother, Marion. Marion was the one that gave the ring to Kay as a proposal. Bob and Kay were united in marriage on April 27, 1954. To this union, seven children were born, one son and six daughters. In January of 1959, they moved to Kay's family farm near Harrold, SD, that was homesteaded by Kay's grandmother. They had a cow/calf operation and dairy herd. On June 5, 1976, they moved to a farm near Clear Lake, SD where they raised crops, Angus cattle and sheep. In 1986, Kay went to work for the CFSA in Clear Lake. She worked there for 10 years. She then went to work as the bookkeeper/secretary for the Catholic Church in Clear Lake for 10 years. Bob and Kay sold the farm and moved to Clear Lake in October of 2019. Kay enjoyed doing anything on the farm, camping, SD State Fair, watching her children's and grandchildren's events and traveling. She loved each new addition to the family thoroughly. The "little ones" brought her so much joy. Her calling in life was to share her love of God and her Catholic faith, especially with her family. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Kay is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Bob Pfeil, Clear Lake, SD; children: Roger (Lisa) Pfeil, Aberdeen, SD, Corinne (Dave) Hardegger, Gillette, WY, Deb (Joe) Armstrong, Rochester, MN, Terri (Keith) Goens, Clear Lake, SD, Brenda (John) Derickson, Lamberton, MN, Carla (John) Freemore, Rapid City, SD and Jodi (Jeff) Knutson, Clear Lake, SD; 26 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren; 1 great great-granddaughter; siblings: Pat Rausch, Marj Gregg, Tom Garrity, Mike Garrity, Carol (Dan) Bancroft, Renee Ihle, Eleanor Schmidt, Daryl (Ruby) Rausch, Jerry (Vicky) Rausch, Vern (Sharon) Rausch, Charlyn (John) Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 siblings, and many other family and friends. - Houseman Funeral Home
