"Ransom Rowe I - The name Ramsom Rowe was heard many times around the Greencastle area. The first Ransom Rowe did not come to Iowa, but at least three of his children settled near here. Ransom Rowe was the father of eight children. They were: William, Elisha, Rufus, Ann, Harriett, Marinda, Ransom II, and Catherine. Ann Rowe was born November 17, 1806, in Madison County, New York. She was married in 1825 in New York to Richard Barker. There were only five settlers in this area when he came here. Richard was born September 17, 1802, in Pennsylvania, but went to Washington County, New York, in 1812. He and Ann moved to Ohio and then to Indiana before they settled in Poweshiek Township in 1849. Their children were: Charles, Elizabeth, Mary, William, Mariah, Ann Elida, Rebecca Jane, Syble, James T., and Rachel. Harriett Rowe was married in New York to Philander Mott. They had a son, Merritt, and lived in Anamosa, Iowa. Marinda Rowe married a Mr. Munger. Ransom Rowe II married Alzina Bailey, the daughter of John Bailey. His family will be found elsewhere. Catherine Rowe married Benjamin Burton Bailey, son of James Bailey, Sr. Their family will be found elsewhere. Richard Barker died December 12, 1887, and Ann (Rowe) Barker died January 22, 1889. Both are buried at McKeever Cemetery." Written by Catharine Henderson. " James E. BAILEY,…His parents were Benjamin and Katherine (Rowe) Bailey, both natives of New York, who came to Indiana soon after their marriage. In 1850 the removed to Poweshiek Township, when this country was still inhabited by Indians, and at a time when game of all kinds, including buffaloes, was abundant. They located one hundred and sixty acres of the best prairie land and at once energetically set about making a home in the new country; they soon added by purchase to their original holdings, and in an incredibly short time were possessed of a comfortable farm and surrounded with all the luxuries to be had in the region. Neighbors were few and far between; and the nearest mill, thirty-five miles distant, at Red Rock, afforded the only means of procuring flour, and required a journey of three of four days to make the round trip. Mrs. Bailey died in 1869.* her husband survived her sixteen years and died in 1885*, at the age of eighty-four. Only two of their ten children lived to maturity, James E.
