Description	:	MONTICELLO, Iowa - Catherine Hanken, 91, of Monticello, died Saturday morning, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, following a brief illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Monsignor Neil Tobin officiating. Friends may register at the church after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cascade. She was born on Dec. 15, 1910, in Cascade, daughter of Joseph and Mary Knepper Strang. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cascade. She was born on Dec. 15, 1910, in Cascade, daughter of Joseph and Mary Knepper Strang. She received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School, Cascade. She graduated with the class of 1929. Catherine taught in the rural schools near Cascade for six and a half years. She became a beautician in 1938. Catherine married Frank Turner in 1947 and he died six months later. On October 21, 1950, Catherine married Learow (Spike) Hanken. She operated her beauty shop at her home in Monticello until 1975 when she retired. Spike preceded her in death on March 14, 1979. Catherine leaves behind a legacy of goodwill. During her retirement years, she made countless visits to nursing-home residents, friends and shut-ins, often sharing baked goods and a "good game of cards." Surviving are a son, Robert of Sun City, Ariz.; two grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary and Clara Strang, both of Cascade; and many nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Nicholas, Cyril, Al, Joseph, Peter and Clarence; and six sisters, Nora, Margaret, Veronica, Helen, May and Elizabeth.
