Description	:	Son of Ferdinand Adam and Geneive Eursula (Jennie) Burgess Foell. His father died when he was 2 years old. He graduated from Swaledale High School and attended one year at the Upper Iowa University in Fayette before enlisting in the Navy V-12 program on Dec. 8, 1942. He was appointed an ensign on Dec. 13, 1944 and trained in Hollywood, Fla. and Gulfport, Miss. Cecil (Bud) was serving on the USS Indianapolis in the Pacific during WWII when it was hit by two submarine torpedos somewhere between Guam and Leyte. Of the 1,196 aboard, about 900 made it into the water in the twelve minutes before she sank. Few life rafts were released. Most survivors wore the standard kapok life jacket. Shark attacks began with sunrise of the first day, and continued until only 316 men were still alive when rescued, almost five days later. Unfortunately, Bud was not one of the survivors. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and held the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. Bud was the youngest of 9 children born to Ferd and Jennie. His Grandparents on his fathers side were Adam and Elizabeth Flenkinstein Foell.
