Burke, 96, pioneer Douglas County resident and longtime Waterville resident, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Highline Convalescent Center in East Wenatchee. She was born Nov. 20, 1900, at Reardan, Wash., to Jacob and Luella (Dalbo) Avenell. In 1904, she moved with her family by covered wagon to the Mansfield area where they homesteaded. She was born Nov. 20, 1900, at Reardan, Wash., to Jacob and Luella (Dalbo) Avenell. In 1904, she moved with her family by covered wagon to the Mansfield area where they homesteaded. Cecil received her education in the Mansfield area schools. She worked as a Mansfield telephone operator for several years. On Feb. 11, 1928, she married John Patrick Burke (1896-1992) at Waterville. They lived in their first home in Waterville until ill health forced their moving to East Wenatchee in 1989. Mrs. Burke was a member of the Waterville Garden Club, the Waterville Homemakers, St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Waterville, and the Altar Society. She especially enjoyed sewing and her garden. After she raised her family she baby-sat for many years. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Harriet Burke of Seattle, and Vincent and Mary Ann Burke of Waterville; daughter and son-in-law Cecilia and Leo Roberts of Lacey; three brothers, Floyd and Jay Avenell of Mansfield, and Claire Avenell of Florence, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, and a sister. Arrangements are by the Waterville Funeral Home.
