Neu, 88, of Sumner died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Sumner East Campus. The Rev. Ken Hutson will officiate. Burial will be at the Sumner Cemetery with military rites provided by the Miller Sumner American Legion Post #41, and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team. Cecil is survived by his wife, Emily Neu of Cozad; daughters, Peg (LeRoy) Stevens of Lisco, Pauline (Corky) Baumgarden of Garden City, Mo., Patsy (Rolland) Carlson of Dayton, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Ladean Caducoy, Bruce (Janna) Eberle, Crista Eberle, Brad (Samantha) Fisher, Brett (Debra) Fisher, Daran (Deanna) Baumgarden, Cherry Stevens, Mason Stevens; seven great-grandchildren, Cassie (Michael) Marugg, Isaiah Caducoy, Megan Eberle, Matthew Eberle, Alycia Fisher, Seth Fisher, Rebecca Fisher and two great-great-grandchildren, Anthony Trujillo and and Aaliyah Trujillo. Cecil was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lee; three granddaughters, Kari Jean Eberle, Shanna and Shelley Stevens; one great-grandson, Sean Baumgarden; three brothers, Kenneth, Omer, and Howard and one sister, Velma Yerg. Cecil was born Aug. 8, 1920 to George and Effie Florence (Freeman) Neu at the family farm north of Overton in Dawson County. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1939. On Sept. 19, 1941 he married Mary Lee Cherry in Lexington. Cecil was a member of the United Church of Sumner. Cecil served during WWII in the U.S. Army Mechanized 115th Cavalry from 1942-46. After the war he and Mary Lee lived near Cumro and later in Sumner. Cecil was a heavy equipment operator for the Custer and Dawson County Department of Roads, retiring from those duties in 1986. He also worked as custodian and bus driver for S-E-M Schools and served the Sumner community as EMT on the Rescue Squad. In retirement, Cecil continued his work as a heavy equipment operator for Overton Sand and Gravel, where he parked his last large machine at age 80. Throughout his life, Cecil maintained and repaired all manner of machines large and small for anyone requesting his services. Mary Lee died in 1995 after 54 years together with Cecil. On Aug. 8, 1996 he married Emily F. Matzke. Memorials are suggested to the Sumner Rescue Unit.
