Description	:	St. Matthews - Cecil Maurice 'Buddy' Thornton Sr., 61, of 208 Brook Drive, St. Matthews, died Thursday, January 29 at his residence. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 31st, at West Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Judy Hames and the Rev. Cooper Stonestreet officiating. Burial will be in West End Cemetery. Mr. Thornton was born in Orangeburg, a son of Mrs. Margaret Stabler Thornton and the late Maurice Eugene Thornton. Burial will be in West End Cemetery. Mr. Thornton was born in Orangeburg, a son of Mrs. Margaret Stabler Thornton and the late Maurice Eugene Thornton. He was a retired Insurance Agent and Businessman. He was associated with United Insurance Company for 40 years. He founded and operated St. Matthews Furniture Company and co-founded Thornton's Auto Sales. Mr. Thornton was a member of West Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as Lay Leader, Speaker, Superintendent of the Sunday School Department, choir member, and teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class. He conducted Wednesday evening prayer services at West Bethel United Methodist Church and Sunday devotions at Jolley Acres Nursing Center for many years. He was a member of the St. Matthews Board of Wachovia Bank, a lifetime member of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, a leader of the Downtown Development Association and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Thornton was named S.C. Father of the Year in 2002. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mrs. Margaret Pooser Thornton of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Michael Gerald (Marla) Fanning of Elloree; and Mrs. George Clayton (Anna Margaret) Weeks Jr. of St. Matthews; one son, Cecil Maurice Thornton Jr. of St. Matthews; his mother, Margaret Stabler Thornton of St. Matthews; one brother, Richard Hampton Thornton Sr. of St. Matthews; two grandchildren, Morgan Olivia Fanning and Michael Thornton Fanning, both of Elloree. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.
