Cecil was born on Feb. 21, 1915, to Otto and Anna Trca Thomas in a log house on the family farm. Growing up on the farm with his sisters, Mary and Ruby, he learned to love hunting and fishing. Read More	VAN BUREN COUNTY - Cecil Otto Thomas, 96, of rural Van Buren County, died Oct. 16, 2011, at Van Buren County Hospital. Cecil was born on Feb. 21, 1915, to Otto and Anna Trca Thomas in a log house on the family farm. Growing up on the farm with his sisters, Mary and Ruby, he learned to love hunting and fishing. During World War II Cecil served with the Navy's 63rd Battalion of Seabees at Guadalcanal, New Britain, and the Philippines. He operated heavy equipment to build roads and was instrumental in building Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, often under fire. After returning home, he continued using his talent as a heavy equipment operator on many road and large dam projects throughout Iowa and the western United States. Cecil was a steward of the family's Century Farm and recently discussed planting more trees. His historical knowledge of the area coupled with his flair for storytelling delighted those who knew him. He also served as a source for the Veterans history Project. While Cecil never married, his strong network of friends and family provided him with love and care as would an immediate family. Cecil is survived by his nieces, Janet(C.L.)Forrest Eversman of Golden, Colo., Sonja Hole of Bermidji, Minn., and Kim(Fritz Reid)Forrest of Los Banos, Calif.; a grandniece, Kelsey Hole Ferrell of Portland; a grandnephew, Forrest Thomas Hansen of San Louis Obispo, Calif.; and cousins, Alice(Art)Mikkelson of Port Orchard, Wash., and Max(Betty)Thomas of Cantril. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Thomas Forrest and Ruby May Thomas Hole. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua; with Lee McIntosh officiating. Burial will be in Pittsburg Cemetery west of Keosauqua with military rites by Beer-Barker Post 113, American Legion in Keosauqua. Visitation begins at 2 pm Friday with family present from 5-7 pm at Pedrick Funeral Home. Memorials to Public Health of Van Buren County may be brought to the funeral home or mailed to the family at Cantril, Iowa.
