She died, childless and fairly young, at the hands of her abuser, her husband. Many who took a blind eye and a death ear to the life she must have lived. Again, those were different times and woman had very thought of very differently back then. Celia was the daughter of Barna and Annie Vinson Daniel, who was physically abused and eventually murdered by her husband. Her family and friends knew of the situation she was in and no one stopped him. Waitman Thompson, Jr came from a highly respected family, but clearly, he had gone astray from his raising. He was acquitted for the murder of his wife, but later committed another crime by which he was found guilty and served time in prison. When he was released from prison, Waitman Thompson, Jr. sought the man who testified against him, murdered the man and his family, and burned his house down. This time he was found guilty and hanged. Where he was buried is unknown. THE MOST DIABOLICAL MURDER This community was startled Monday last with the news that a most shocking and diabolical murder had been committed that morning in New Hope township in this county. The victim is Mrs. Celia Thompson, wife of Waitman Thompson, and daughter of Barna Daniel, Esq. and painful as it is to relate, she had been brutally beat to death with a light wood knot, on a public pathway leading to her father's house, and when only within seventy-five yards from the public road. Early Tuesday morning, Coroner Kirby, repaired to the scene of the murder with a jury to hold the inquest. It seems that she left home early in the morning to visit her father, and all indications are that she was then murdered, but the horrible deed was not discovered until after sundown that evening, when her dead body was found, face down, on the spot where the awful deed had been committed. An examination showed that her skull was badly crushed. At least four heavy blows had been dealt, and it is supposed that her death was instantaneous. There appears to have been little or no struggle as far as the ground indicates, and it would seem that the murder was a premeditated affair. Our worthy coroner no doubt felt the importance of this case, and succeeded in collecting a most excellent jury compiled of W.F. Kornegay, B.F. Arrington, S.H. Denmark, Asher Edwards, A. Lehman, Matthew Faircloth, Joel Lewis, W.A. Denmark, J.B. Harper, Lewis Howell, W.T. Whitley, B.F.Smith, Abner Slaughter. The jury met, viewed the body, heard the evidence on Tuesday and adjourned to meet in the Court House Wednesday morning. In all about fifteen witnesses were examined, and at ... on Wednesday, the jury rendered the verdict that in the opinion of the jurors, Celia Thompson, came to her death from injuries inducted by her husband, Waitman Thompson, with some blunt instrument. The verdict was signed by all the ...jurors, and Thompson was committed jail to answer the horrible charge of wife murder. He protest that he is innocent. The crime is indeed horrible to contemplate, and the fact that this makes the fifth of the kind committed in this county since December, is enough to ... alarm our people, and all agree that the gallows must be promptly invoked to check such lawlessness. If Thompson is not the man, it is to be hoped that the incarnate fiend who perpetuated the brutal murder may be discovered and brought to a speedy justice.
