Read More	Doctor Piscataquis Observer Dover ME 1 Feb 1877 p. 2 Obituary The death of Dr. Chandler Woods which occured Sunday eve., 21 Jan, after an illness of 12 days, deserves more than a passing notice, for by it, our town loses one of its most respected and worthy citizens, the entire community an obliging and exemplary member and neighbor; and a bereaved family mourns for a kind and affectionate husband and father. The subject of this sketch was born in the town of Unity, in this state, in the year 1810. Mr. Woods moved to Abbot 35 years ago, when the town was new, and at a time when none but the most hardy pioneers ventured among the wilds of these interior townships. He felled the trees, cleared up and improved one of the most valuable farms in town, upon which he has since resided. When a young man he commenced the practice of medicine according to the Thompsonian School, and in the early days of this town his visits to many of the settlers, at a period when they could not compensate physicians as liberally as today, were more of the order of philanthropy and Christian charity than professional. In politics he was formerly a democrat of the Jacksonian stamp (?) when slavery threat and (?) with ruin he associated himself with the republican party, (?) casting his vote with them for Gen Fremont for President. Since then he has been a staunch republican. In religion he was one of the most advanced and liberal of (?) spiritualists entertaining unflinching belief (prog?) life beyond the dark . (?) he always believed in and acted upon all proper occasions and a steadfast faith in a Supreme Being, who was, to his mind (?) high ideal of purity and love. (?) this Christian (?) God did not (?) but was (sound?) comfort amidst afflictions and bodily suffering . He has been a model of the moral and high-minded man ever treating all with whom he mingled as his equal and brother. As a citizen he was always identified with public improvements and enterprise in his own town. The afflicted widow, and the families of his children have the heartfelt sympathy of this community. The funeral services were performed at the Congregational Church at Abbot Village Tuesday, Jan. 23rd, where a large concourse of his townsmen, neighbors and relatives were gathered to pay their last respects to his memory. Rev. A. Redlon, of Abbot, offered prayer, and the funeral address was delivered by Rev. E. B. Averill, of Dover. J.F.S.
