He had been in failing health for several years but he was only bedfast a week preceding his death which was caused by complications due to his advanced years. Channing A. Hedden was born at Detroit, Mich., April 11, 1859, and passed away in Hawarden August 7, 1940, at the advanced age of 81 years, 3 months and 26 days. When but a child he moved with his parents to Parkersburg, Iowa, where on November 8, 1882, he was united in marriage with Marietta Stowe. Following their marriage they continued to make their home at Parkersburg for about a year when they moved to Elmore, Minn., where they resided until August, 1892, when they came to Hawarden and he lived here continuously since that time. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hedden, five of whom survive. Wayne was accidentally drowned in the Sioux river January 13, 1928, and Roy passed away last April 5th. Mrs. Hedden preceded her husband in death January 27, 1934. The surviving children are Mrs. Ward Estes, Inning, S.D.; Frank Hedden, Sturgis, S.D.; Mrs. William Younie, Hawarden; Ward Hedden, La Porte, Ind., and Mrs. Julius Finch, Rapid City, S.D. He also leaves a wife and younger brother, William Hedden, Sunnyside, Wash., 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. When Mr. Hedden came to Hawarden he entered the employ of the North Western Railway company by whom he was employed for over 35 years, retiring 11 years ago when he reached his 70th year. He worked as fireman on the switch engine and later as a machinist's helper in the round house. After the death of his wife Mr. Hedden made his home in the Mrs. Mary Granger rooming house and looked after his own needs until a week ago when he became bedfast. During the past six years he spent much of his time with his children and his last trip was to La Porte, Ind., where he visited his son Ward. After his return from this trip he failed rapidly and his death was not unexpected. He was a member of the W.O.W. lodge. The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa) 8/8/1940
