Description	:	Charity Riggs Chamberlain was born June 13, 1854, in Big Mound, Iowa, in Lee County. She married John Lewis Chamberlain on Aug. 10, 1876, in Henry County, Iowa. The couple had eight children: Mary Effie, Edgar Irving, Paul Thetis, Mark Othel, Clara Goldie, Sylvia Grace, John, and James Arthur. Mary Effie, born in 1877, died as an infant. On May 25, 1893, Charity's 41-year-old husband, James, was found lying in mud and water in the Des Moines River beneath the Wabash Railroad trestle in the city's old Richmond section. She married John Lewis Chamberlain on Aug. 10, 1876, in Henry County, Iowa. The couple had eight children: Mary Effie, Edgar Irving, Paul Thetis, Mark Othel, Clara Goldie, Sylvia Grace, John, and James Arthur. Mary Effie, born in 1877, died as an infant. On May 25, 1893, Charity's 41-year-old husband, James, was found lying in mud and water in the Des Moines River beneath the Wabash Railroad trestle in the city's old Richmond section. He'd been hit in the head with a heavy object, and died four days later on May 29, 1893. Following her husband’s death, Charity grieved deeply and died a few years later on June 15, 1898, leaving her seven remaining children to be scattered among relatives and friends. Most of the children seldom saw one another again. Charity was buried in the Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa. (Jay Funeral Home Bk 6 Pg 74 44Y) The couple's youngest child completely disappeared around age 18, and the eldest was only 15 when his father died. James Chamberlain's 1893 murder remains unsolved.
