Char Alyea Smith of Monticello died Monday evening, Aug. 29, 1994, from injuries received in an auto accident on the north edge of Monticello. Charlene Jean Alyea was born Aug. 31, 1934 in Scotch Grove Township, Jones County, the daughter of J. Charles and Fern Leggett Alyea. She graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools in 1951. She then attended Cornell College and later worked at Killian's Dept. Store in Cedar Rapids. Charlene J. Alyea and Galen Helgens were married Oct. 26,1955 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. She was employed by the Monticello Express, Publishers Idea Exchange and the Anamosa Journal-Eureka. In 1981, she became the editor of the Iowa Pork Producers magazine and later the National Pork Producers magazine. Char started the marketing consulting firm of Results Ink in 1989. Char Alyea Helgens and Lowell L. Smith were married June 15, 1994 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Monticello. She continued on with her writing and consulting business until her death. She was active in many areas of substance abuse treatment She was currently on the Iowa Commission of Substance Abuse, where she had served as the chairperson. Survivors include her husband, Lowell; two daughters, Kami Sprau of Monticello and Taylor Alyea of Gainesville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Lynn Truax of Monticello; two stepsons, Bruce of Cedar Rapids and Joel of Monticello; three Grandchildren, Krystal, Kody and Kip Sprau; and six stepgrandchildren, Nichole Stiffler, Megan and Michael Truax, and Jason, Jarod and Jacob Smith, her mother, Fern Borschel of Davenport, and a sister Jo Fifield of Dubuque. She was preceded in death by her father, J. Charles Alyea, her stepfather, Ken Borschel, and a grandson, Dustin Michael Sprau. Casket bearers were Loren Dietrich, Tom McDonnell, Dave Krause, Robert Decker, Bob Goodyear, Tom Nehl. Goettsch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements
