He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861. Crawford was promoted first to Quartermaster Sgt., and then to 3rd Battalion Commissary Sgt. on May 14, 1862. He mustered out of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 25, 1862. Crawford then reenlisted on Aug 17, 1863, and was commissioned as the 2nd Lieutenant of Co. L, 8th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 30, 1863.
