Flowers surrounding the bier further attested to the esteem in which the decease was held. The rites were held at St. Ludger Catholic church with Rev. W. Windolph officiating. Charley Albert Hammond was born of pioneer parents, Henry and Catherine Hammond of Exeter, Nebr. on November 8, 1884 and departed this life May 23, 1940 at the age of 55 years, 6 months and 7 days. The earlier part of his life was lived at Exeter, where he learned the barber trade and assisted his brother in that business. In 1908 he moved on a farm near Sidney, where he made his home for a period of 20 years. On February 12, 1928 he was united in marriage to Minnie Schreier of Center, Nebraska, To this union were born three children, Velma, Galen and Dwight, all of whom are at home. In the year of 1929 he and his wife moved from Sidney to Center, where he operated a pool hall and barber shop. In 1934 he moved to a farm two and a half miles east of Center and resided there for five years. His failing health forced him to quit farming and at that time he with his family moved to Bazile Mills, where they operated a filling station and the post office. He leaves to mourn besides his widow, three children, four brothers, Hugh of Sidney, Nebr; Tim of Hugo, Colo.; Frank of Tuthill, S.D.; Henry of Exeter, Nebr; one sister Ann Becker of Exeter; other relatives and a host of friends. His eldest sister, Mary of York, preceded him in death April 19, 1940.
