Aug 18, 1911 Father: William Bennett Morton Mother: Nancy Martina ROBINSON Morton Charles Albert (Jake) Morton, a former resident of Skidmore, died Sunday, July 7, in the Maryville Health Care Center at the age of 99. A retired farmer, he had resided at the center for three years. The son of William Bennett and Nancy Martina Robinson Morton, he was born May 6, 1886, at Napier, MO. He was a member of the Burr Oak Community Church. On August 18, 1911, he was married in Maitland to Myrtle May Deffenbaugh. His parents, one son, two sisters, one brother, five stepbrothers and four stepsisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, four daughters, Ella Mae Furster, Skidmore, Grace Leona Grishon, Rosendale, Lois Marie Patterson, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Anna Bell Montgomery, Graham; one son, Charles Everett Morton, Rock Port; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with the Rev. Raymond L. Moushon officiating. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Skidmore, MO. From The Skidmore News, November 1, 1984: Myrtle May Deffenbaugh, born at Skidmore, April 22, the daughter of Thomas McKinnley Deffenbaugh and Mary Belle Money Deffenbaugh. She met a boy from Holt county who was Charles Albert "Jake" Morton. He was born at Napier, MO, May 6, 1886, son of William Albert and Tina Marie Morton. His mother Tina was of the Indian Tribe from White Cloud, KS. Jake and Myrtle were married at Maitland, on August 12, 1910. They are the parents of six children, Grace Leona Grishow, Ella Mae Furster, Louise Marie Smith, William Thomas Morton, Anna Belle Montgomery and Charles Everett Morton. They have 15 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren, one being deceased, and several great-great grandchildren. Myrtle worked in the Skidmore community at different times to help raise her family. She recalls working for Doc Manning as a mid-wife, and her brother Flick Deffenbaugh when he was operating the Deffenbaugh Cafe here in Skidmore. Jake has worked at several different jobs during his long life, he was employed at the Grigsby Apple Orchard, worked for the W.P.A., as a farmer, was in the logging business and worked for the railroad for a short time. They have made their home in the Skidmore community since their marriage. Myrtle makes her home in Skidmore on West Elm Street, with her daughter Ella and granddaughter, Dixie. Jake fell and broke his hip about 10 years ago and has since made his home at the Health Care Center. Jake is able to be up and around by using a wheel chair. Jakes hearing is not quite as sharp as it once was, but both have seen a lot of history in the making and can tell some very interesting stories. Since this anniversary in August was not known to us, we belatedly offer our congratulations and sincere good wishes to Myrtle and Jake. They have been good neighbors to the people of Skidmore for many years and deserve to be remembered!!! Note: This was written in honor of Myrtle and Jakes's 74th Annivesary.
