Interment will follow at the Norwood Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Charles Amos Shelton, Jr. (Charlie) was born on February 27th, 1940 to Charles and Dortha Shelton in Lucas County. He was raised the son of a farmer and received his education in country schools as a boy and graduated from Chariton High School in 1958. Charlie grew up on a farm and participated in 4-H and high school football. He joined the Army / Army National Guard after high school and met his wife when he was 19. He married Carolyn Joyce Rodgers of Burnside, Iowa on January 22nd, 1960 and they had their first child (Charles Joseph Shelton) in November of 1962. Charlie and Carolyn lived in Burnside for a few years before moving to Chariton to begin farming in 1966. The couple had two more children shortly thereafter; Carolyn Sue Shelton was born in March of 1967 and Benjamin Thomas Shelton was born in October of 1968. Charlie and Carolyn raised cattle and hogs and grew corn, hay, and soybeans annually until expanding their farm into a large hog confinement operation in the early 1970s. Charlie sustained permanent back injuries while in the military, but he endured his pain daily so that he wouldn’t disappoint his business partner….his wife, Carolyn. They closed the hog operation in 1999. They recently retired from farming after building their new home. Charlie enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in 4-H, sports, and other scholastic activities. His favorite pastime was playing cribbage with his family (or anyone who would play). He loved fishing in his farm ponds as much as possible and passed on his love for fishing to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed occasional poker games with some close friends. Charlie was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and never knew a stranger. He loved people; he really, really loved people. His family joked often that his trips to the grocery store would last hours as he would talk to literally everyone in the store before coming home. The family would humorously remind him to buy milk and ice cream as the very last thing before heading for the checkout line. One of his greatest passions was cooking and serving roasted hog meat. For several years, he was the cook for weddings and other special events. He truly looked forward to being in charge of the meat pit at the county fair. He would camp at the fair and stay awake for two days at a time just to ensure it was cooked “the Charlie way”. He took great pride in raising sweet corn and selling it during the summer. He would always stay until the last bag of corn was sold. All the while, smiling with pride that people were pleased with his product and taking great pleasure in yet another opportunity to visit with friends and strangers. He was very proud of his children’s careers in medicine, education, and business and rarely missed an opportunity to tell people about their achievements. He was also so very proud of all of his grandchildren and their many activities and achievements. Charlie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014 and passed away on May 3rd, 2016 at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dortha Shelton; sister, Irene Lucille Andersen; and brother-in-law, Lowell Andersen.
