Sixteen children are orphaned and three wives are widowed by the founding of the Mahone Bay schooner, Iona W., whose captain and crew of five have paid the toll of the sea with their lives. First trace of the long lost vessel since she was seen beating before a gale off Whitehead in early December was reported Saturday noon in a wireless from Superintendent Blakeney, of Sable Island. The message to C.H. Harvey, agent of Marine and Fisheries read: "The cabin of schooner has landed on the east end of the island containing an Aneroid barometer, a Bliss compass, a barrel of fishing nets and some fish hooks. A Norwegian fog horn was found near by." "Written in lead pencil over the bunk were the words-" Wind south June 22, 1913, Cold Weather in Caribou. Waiting for bait." Signed, Angus Zwicker, Lunenburg County That memorandum over the bunk is final evidence that the Iona W. has sunk at sea with all hands perishing. This was proven yesterday by Angus Zwicker, at Mahone Bay. Zwicker declared he had pencilled the paragraph while on a fishing trip aboard the Iona W., and Welsley Mosher, another Mahone Bay man, remembers watching his shipmate scribbling those lines. Upon receiving the wireless from Superintendent Blakeney, Mr. Harvey communicated with Dr. Stewart, M.P. for Lunenburg County. Dr. Stewart telephoned from Bridgewater to Mahone Bay and heard Zwicker identify the note he had written above the bunk on that fishing trip of six months ago. Mr. Harvey has ordered Superintendent Blakeney to keep a sharp watch out for bodies drifting ashore. Whether the Iona W.has broken up at sea or has been shattered on the rocks off Whitehead or has fallen prey to the deadly sands of Sable Island, still remains a mystery of the sea. In company with a Lunenburg vessel, the Iona W. left Georgetown. Prince Edward Island, on December 6th., and was swallowed up in a storm off Whitehead a few days later. The two schooners were sailing together until the captain of the Lunenburg vessel doomed it so dangerous that he ran for shelter in a nearby harbour. When the Iona W. was last sighted her sails appeared to have been ripped away, but her captain was not trying to steer for a sheltering cove. He seemed to be confident of weathering the storm. She was built in 1903, registered 93 tons, and was owned by Jacob Ernst and Sons of Mahone Bay. With thanks to Angie Mckay-Drew.
