He graduated from the University of Virginia and was an agriculturalist that was dedicated to the field in which was instrumental with the formation of the Prince George's County Agricultural Society, the Maryland State Agricultural Society and the United States Agricultural Society. In 1856 he founded the Maryland Agricultural College which was the first agriculture college in the United States and he was the President of the Board of Trustees.
