Harper died Thursday afternoon at the Herbert Cline home southeast of town. The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church by Rev. Dr. A. M. Billingsley. Charles Brenton Harper was born Feb. 22, 1861, on what is now known as the Leahy Bros, farm a few miles east of West Union, and departed this life on the afternoon of March 11, 1926, at the age of sixty-five years and nineteen days. The end came at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Cline, with whom he bad been living for the past four years. Mr. Harper had suffered from a severe attack of grippe during the middle of the winter, but of late was much improved and apparently had about regained his usual state of health. However, while walking Thursday afternoon in the yard near the house he was suddenly stricken. With the help of a neighbor who chanced to be passing he was carried into the house, medical aid was immediately summoned, and everything was done to restore him that could be but to no avail, and in a very brief time he passed away. Mr. Harper was one of a family of thirteen, seven brothers and six sisters, he "being the youngest of the brothers. Three brothers and five sisters have preceded him to the great beyond. Those who survive him are George W. of Storm Lake, Iowa; William H. of Arkansas; Joseph R. of Retlaw, Alberta, Canada; and Mrs. Sarah Miekle of Oelwein. In March, 1896, Mr. Harper was united in marriage with Miss Kitty Stahl, who departed this life about two years ago. Three children were born to this union: John Earl, who gave his life for his country in military service during the World war; and two daughters—Mildred, now Herbert Cline, and Marjorie, now Mrs. Marion Borland, who remain to mourn his passing; and two grandchildren, John Earl Cline, and Mildred Jene Borland. While not affiliated with any church, Mr. Harper was a firm believer in the Christian religion. He was a loving father, and being possessed of a remarkably amiable and mind disposition, to know him was to be his friend.
