Browne died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the Haxtun Hospital where he was recovering from a broken hip. He was 88. Charles was born on March 12, 1916 in Baldwin, Iowa to Charles S. and Dora Browne. The majority of his education was in the Monmouth school from which he graduated from high school. In 1936 he married Charlene Alden. A short time after their wedding they moved to Colorado, settling west of Amherst where they made their home in what they referred to as the shack. Times were hard and money was short, but they had many good times with others who were also struggling. Chuck worked for his uncle Vet Chase on the farm and ranch. He continued wheat farming for 40 years and also did some custom combining. Later he started his own trucking business hauling fuel in large transports. He always enjoyed horses and had several brood mares and raised and sold colts. Some were trained to run in the chariot races. He loved to play baseball and played on an Army team during World War II. Later he played on the Holyoke town team for many years. He pitched until he broke his arm throwing a fast pitch, and he later played first base. Charles and Charlene had three daughters. The oldest died at birth. They then had Leilani and Rochelle. In later years Chuck and family moved to a farm southwest of Amherst where Chuck farmed and ranched. Chuck also enjoyed helping his two daughters with their horses in 4-H and enjoyed Rochelle in the riding club. In 1968 Chuck married Helen Landreth. They sold their home in 1986 and moved to Julesburg. Chuck kept busy by helping farmers during times when they needed extra help. Chuck enjoyed keeping his home and his vehicles in excellent condition. Chuck enjoyed drinking coffee and visiting with special friends. As their health declined, Chuck took care of Helen who had broken her hip, until he could no longer provide for her. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Andrew and Rufus Brown; sister Lillian Lindp; and an infant daughter. He is survived b his second wife, Helen Browne; daughters Leilani Sperber and Rochelle Smith; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nephews Alden and Adrian Browne; and nieces Mavis Minar and Marla Grose. Funeral services were held Monday, May 17 at the Holyoke United Methodist Church. Interment followed at the Holyoke Memorial Park.
