Jahnke, a retired farmer living in Tripoli, is numbered among the early settlers in Bremer county and among the men whose activities have been important factors in promoting agricultural growth in this locality. He was born in Germany, April 9, 1855, and is a son of George and Caroline (Schwim) Jahnke, also natives of that country. The parents came to the United States in 1861 and settled in Cook county, Illinois, where they remained until 1869. In that year they moved to Bremer county, Iowa, and after renting land for a few years the father bought eighty acres in Frederika township. He carried on general farming upon that property until he retired from active life, moving into Tripoli, where he and his wife passed away. Six children were born to their union: Dorothea, who died in infancy; C.C. , of this review; Mary, the wife of Christ Buhr, of Tripoli; William, who resides upon the old homestead in Frederika township; Minnie, the deceased wife of John Fink, of Tripoli; and Nellie, the wife of W.H. Tegtmeier, of Tripoli. C.C. Jahnke accompanied his parents to America in 1861 and in 1869 came with them to Bremer county, where he has since resided. He grew up amid pioneer conditions and during his youth much of the work of the farm fell to his share, for his father was in poor health and Mr. Jahnke was the eldest son. He can yet remember the farming methods of those days and the old-fashioned machinery then in use. particularly the old J.H. Manny reaper. He remained with his parents until he was twenty seven of age and then rented land for a few years. He later purchased eighty acres in Fremont township and after residing upon this for nine years, purchased another farm on section 16 Fremont township. This comprised also eighty acres of land and upon it Mr. Jahnke carried on general farming and stock-raising for many years, meeting with that success which is the natural result of practical methods and unremitting industry and enterprise. He recently sold his farm and moved into Tripoli, where he lives retired. Mr. Jahnke married Miss Mary Henrichs, a native of Germany and a daughter of John and Katie (Carstens) Henrichs, who came to the United States about the year 1874 and settled in Bremer county. this state. Both have passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Jahnke have two children, Arthur and Louis, engaged in the merchandise business in Tripoli. Mr. Jahnke is a republican in his political beliefs and a member of the Lutheran church. Practically his entire life has been spent in Bremer county, in the development of which he has borne his full share, and where his upright dealings and honorable principles have gained him an extensive circle of friends.
