Description	:	CHARLES C. BROWN Charles Canby Brown was born January 13, 1862, near St. Paris, in Champaign County. He was the only child born to the union of Amos A. Brown and Hannah Wert. BROWN Charles Canby Brown was born January 13, 1862, near St. Paris, in Champaign County. He was the only child born to the union of Amos A. Brown and Hannah Wert. Three days after Charles was born, his father, a private in Company C, of the Sixty-Sixth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, proceeded with his unit to join the Union forces in West Virginia. The Sixty-Sixth struck their tents and left Fort McArthur (near Urbana), on January 17, 1862, under the command of Colonel Charles Candy. On the morning of June 9th, Private Amos Brown was one of 2700 men in line of battle awaiting the attack of the enemy. In charge of 36,000 Confederate troops was the famous General Stonewall Jackson. The Sixty-Sixth acted a conspicuous part in defending a battery of seven guns on the left of the line. The enemy had possession of the guns three times and as many times were driven from them by the regiment. So quickly was the enemy compelled to abandon its ground that it had no time to turn the artillery upon the Union troops. Of the 400 men of the Sixty-Sixth that engaged the enemy that day, the regiment lost 109. This Civil War battle is referred to as the Battle of Fort Republic, and was the first engagement for the regiment and the first and only engagement for Private Amos Brown. Amos became a prisoner of war and after contracting typhoid fever was returned in a prisoner exchange to Annapolis, Maryland. He died on October 1, 1862 and was buried in the Annapolis National Cemetery. Charles's mother applied to the government for a pension after her husband's death and received $8.00 per month until 1884. On Christmas day, December 25, 1886, Charles was united in marriage to Emma Alice Barnes. Emma was the daughter of Michael Barnes and Margaret Kreglow, who migrated into the Quincy area from West Virginia. Charles and Emma had the following children; John Alvin, Ray w., Cloyd Elmer, Forest Edward, and Mrs. James (Margaret) Whiteford. John Alvin made his home in Mason City, Iowa, and Ray W. in Boone, Iowa. Cloyd Elmer's last residence was Wapakoneta, Ohio. Forest remained in the Quincy area. Charles only daughter, Margaret, with whom he made his last home, lived near Piqua, Ohio. All of Charles and Emma's children attended a nearby one-room school called the Baughman schoolhouse. Charles and Emma farmed in the Quincy area most of their lives. Emma died on April 3, 1933, and was laid to rest in the Rosedale Cemetery, which is located south of Carysville a few miles, on state route 235. Charles Candy Brown died four years later on October 6, 1937, while living with his daughter in Washington Township, Miami County. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Rosedale Cemetery.
