Description	:	Age 87, passed away June 5, 2000. He came to Delray from Harrisburg, VA. in 1932. Just as Delray was becoming well known as an artist and writers colony. He attained a job at the Arcade Tap Room. The Tap Room owner Bill Krause became not only his employer, but a dear friend and benefactor to Charles. Mr. Kraus decided because of Charles performance at the Tap Room, that he would finance Charles to buy the Patio Delray Restaurant in 1944 which he owned for the next 20 years. Just as Delray was becoming well known as an artist and writers colony. He attained a job at the Arcade Tap Room. The Tap Room owner Bill Krause became not only his employer, but a dear friend and benefactor to Charles. Mr. Kraus decided because of Charles performance at the Tap Room, that he would finance Charles to buy the Patio Delray Restaurant in 1944 which he owned for the next 20 years. During those years in the 20's and 50's the Arcade Tap Room and The Patio Restaurants became the premium dining establishments in Delray. Mr. Herings, patrons included royalty, movie stars, sports figures and politicians from around the world. In the early 1950's Charles became the Santa Claus of Delray. He took great joy in riding into town on a fire engine or ascending down in a helicopter to bring smiles and happiness to the children. Charles met his true love in 1940, a beautiful Georgia girl, Ruth Elder, who unfortunately predeceased Charles in 1988, Charles is survived by his son, Charles C. Hering III, of Delray Beach and his daughter, Carroll Smith of Tuscallossa, AL and a granddaughter, Stacy M. Smith also of Tuscalloosa. Mr Hering will be buried beside his wife in Harrisonburg, VA. The Palm Beach Post Florida Sunday, June 18, 2000
