Read More	OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - January 8, 1997 Charles Christian Luther, 89, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at Timbercrest Home in North Manchester. He was born July 27, 1907 in Champaign County, IL, son of John William and Emily (Webster) Luther. He moved with his family to a farm in Union Township, Whitley County, Indiana, at the age of three. He attended school in Coesse and graduated from Coesse High School in 1925. He received his A.B. degree from Indiana University, and began a teaching career at his home school in Coesse where he taught math and science. In 1941, he received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, and then taught vocational agriculture at Jefferson Center High School for the major portion of his teaching career. He also served as a 4-H leader at Jefferson Center. He taught math and science at Columbia City Joint High School from 1958-1959, then transferred to Woodlan High in East Allen County School system where he taught until 1967; he retired after 30 years teaching. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a major. He was united in marriage to Ruth Brandon June 7, 1941 in Churubusco. They made their home on a Jefferson Township farm in Whitley County for 35 years before moving to Timbercrest Retirement Home in September, 1989. He was a member of Laud Christian Church, the Columbia City Masonic Lodge #189 F & AM, Huntington York Rite, Indiana State and Wabash County Retired Teachers Associations. His interests included conservation, planting trees and wildlife habitat. He served on the Board of Supervisors for the Whitley County Soil and Conservation District for several terms. He also raised registered American Saddle Horses and won awards in the State Horse Shows in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Charles C. Luther Jr. of Fort Wayne and William Brandon Luther of Springfield, OH; three granddaughters; a step grandson; two great grandsons; a brother Stuart Luther and a sister, Gladys Luther, both of Columbia City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Luther and Ralph Luther. Funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997 at Smith and Sons Funeral Home of Columbia City with Rev. James A. Clifford, pastor of Laud Christian Church, officiating. #Burial was in South Park Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be made to Laud Christian Church.
