The funeral services for the late C. C. Furnas, whose death at the Stanley hospital in Rochester, Minn., Monday forenoon, was announced in the Evening Journal of that day was held this afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church. The sermon was preached by Dr. R. M. Shipman, after which interment was in the Nevada cemetery. The services were largely attended by a large concourse of old neighbors and friends of the family, as well as numerous relatives from a distance. Mr. Furnas had bee a sufferer for many months and a few weeks ago, accompanied by his wife, had gone up to Rochester, where he had expected to go through the Mayo clinic for an examination to determine the cause of his troubles. When he arrived there he was so weakened that it was not deemed advisable for him to be taken through the clinic at once and he was placed in a hospital that he might be built up preparatory for the examination through the clinic. He had apparently been getting along very nicely and was getting much better, when he was taken very suddenly on Monday forenoon. A post mortem examination developed the fact that his anaemic condition was due to a cancer of the stomach which had been eating his life away and death was due to hemorrhage. Friends in this city were wired regarding his death at once; by Mr. Olson, his son-in-law, who had joined Mrs. Furnas and Mrs. Olson there only that morning. The body reached here at an early hour over the Rock Island Tuesday morning, accompanied by Mrs. Furnas and the daughter Mrs. Mildred Olson and her husband. It was taken directly to the family home, where it lay until this afternoon when the funeral services were held. Mr. Furnas was a native of Montgomery county, Ohio, where he was born Charles Clayto, son of Charles and Elizabeth Airhart-Furnas, on November 14, 1849. While he was still very young the family moved out to Iowa and located in Louisa county where numerous members of the family are still living. It was on November 20, 1873 that he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Snyder at Muscatine. The continued to make their home in Louisa county until 1875 when they came out to Story county and located on a farm 7 miles north of this city where they lived until about 30 years ago when they moved into Nevada. Two children were born to this union, they being Roy Arlington who was born in 1877 and lived but a few years. The other is the daughter Mildred, now the wife of W. A. Olson, living nearby the home of the parents. Besides the wife and daughter, Mr. Furnas leaves numerous brothers and sisters, the most of them being located down near the old home in Louisa county. They are Elmer and Clark Furnas, Mrs. Adaline Holiday, Mrs. Belle Longstreth, Mrs. Emma Wagner who lives in New Mexico. Mr. Furnas was a member of the Methodist church, with which he united at Johnson Grove 1884. After the family moved to Nevada, he transferred his membership to the church here and was always an active and devoted member of the congregation. Mr. Furnas had been a member of the official board of the church, being a trustee at the time of his death. His advice was always considered sound and logical and his opinions of value in the work of the board. After leaving the farm and locating in Nevada in 1893, Mr. and Mrs. Furnas built a fine residence over on Tenth street, and that had since been the family home. He then took up work as a carpenter and was faithful and industrious workmen in the builders trade during his long residence in the city, until the condition of his health forbid further activity He was a man of much character and purpose in life, industrious and well respected in every way, lie was a loving husband and father and greatly devoted to his home. His death will be deeply mourned by not only the members of his immediate family, but by a wide circle of neighbors and friends who had learned to know him well and respected him for his many admirable traits. Among the relatives and friends from out of the city who are here to attend the funeral services are Mrs. Anna Mitchael, a sister of Mrs. Furnas and Mrs. Clara Conner, a niece, both of Grand View; Mrs. Henry Scheaffer of Letts; Messrs. Elmer and Clark Furnas, brothers of Letts and possibly others from a distance. Mr. A. K. Olson father of W. A. Olson of this city is also up from Cambridge to attend the services.
