We’ve lost a fine friend and a valuable citizen.” – October 22, 1936 “Charles David Clawson, son of Phineas and Mary James Clawson, was born near Independence, Indiana, on February 19, 1872, and died at the Ward Hospital, Williamsport, October 17th, 1936, at the age of 64 years, 7 months and 28 days. On the 8th day of March 1892, he was united in marriage with Mary A. Brutus, who survives together with one son, Paul Clawson, his daughter-in-law, wife of Paul Clawson, and one granddaughter, Marianna Clawson. He is also survived by four brothers namely: See and Noble Clawson, of Independence; William Clawson, of near Pine Village, and Timothy Clawson, of Tyler, Minnesota; and a number of nephews and nieces. Mr. Clawson was baptized and received into full membership of the United Brethren church of Independence and lived a consistent religious life since his admission to the church. He was also a member of Lone State Lodge, No. 549 of the Independence Order of Odd Fellows, joining the fraternity in 1898. It was the privilege of the writer of this sketch to have known Charley (as he was familiarly called) for ever a half century, he being a member of my classes fifty-one years ago. As a boy and as a student, he was kind, obedient and considerate of the rights of his schoolmates and of his instructor. As a business man he was honest and reliable in his dealings, and never took advantage of those with whom he had any business relations. I never knew him to violate or fail to meet any obligation he once assumed. His work was good and his promises were fulfilled. As a citizen he was law abiding, moral and trustworthy, quiet and unassuming and was worthy of, and had the respect of all who knew him. As a husband and father he was faithful and kind and was always deeply concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of his family. In his passing the community has lost an honorable member, one who was a valuable asset and one who lived a clean, upright and virtuous life and he will live in the hearts and minds of those whom he has left behind. He fought the good fight, he kept the faith, therefore we find consolation in the promise that we will receive a crown of righteousness which a loving God will bestow upon all who do ‘his will’.” - October 29, 1936
