Rising Sun, a.k.a. "Charlie Boy," has passed into eternal life to his creator, Maheo, on Oct. 17, 2009 in Spokane. He grew up in Busby, Mont., where he also attended grade and high school. While in high school, he played football and enjoyed playing the trumpet. He would play Taps for military funerals. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, camping, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Kit Fox Society. Upon leaving the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, he worked in Yellowstone National Park and spent many hours on community projects while in Washington and Utah. Charlie thoroughly enjoyed his time working BIA Forestry. There were many days he would watch the sky and look for "money clouds" as he called them and carefully packed his bags, waiting for the fire whistle to blow. In 1992, for the first time, Charlie picked up a flute and taught himself to play this instrument. His first recording was titled "Songs of the Heart" and has since recorded four more CDs. Charlie traveled extensively throughout the U.S., but was always just a phone call away. His health started deteriorating in 1997; from this came the life-saving surgery of kidney transplant in 1999 and the donor was his brother, Irvin Jr. For this, he was forever grateful. Realizing that he was having difficulty playing the flute and other activities, he came to realize that another transplant was soon to be. He was placed on the waiting list for a new heart in August 2001. After long hospital stays and more than a year of waiting, a miracle transplant happened on Dec. 2, 2002. Although he did not know the donor this time, he had a special prayer for that person. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Sacred Heart Medical Center of Spokane for the life-saving surgeries. Charlie was married for a short time and from this union Earl John "E.J." was born. He was devoted father and cherished the times he spent with his son. His father, Irvin Rising Sun, Sr.; brother Frank; a sister, Lazona; and adopted mother Agnes Russell; his maternal grandparents, John and Marie (Big Beaver) Swallow; a special step-grandmother Jessie Wallowing Bull Swallow; paternal grandparents William and Josie Bearquiver Rising Sun preceded Charlie in death. Survivors include his son E.J. of Dayton, Wash.; his mother, Frances Swallow of Busby; his brothers, Irvin Rising Sun Jr. and Lucian Rising Sun; his sisters, Vivian and Williamette Rising Sun, Parmalee Baker, Roberta and Gail Bigback. He is also survived by many cousins and many friends, too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Busby High School Gymnasium. Interment will follow in the Busby Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements. Oct 24, 2009 - Billings Gazette
