McCown died in his home in Florence on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, from lung cancer. Mr. McCown was born at the family farm in Effingham on May 9, 1931, the son of Wilmer William McCown and Frances Dusenbury McCown. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from Clemson A & M. He was married for 46 years to the late Harriet Latta Haun McCown of Hartsville. He owned a mechanical contracting business, Johnson McCown Co. In business, he placed humanity ahead of gain. He was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 30 years where he served as a deacon. In church he always tried to speak up for the "widows and the meek." He never chose the easy path; instead, he tried to follow the path of the Lord. He was instrumental in the creation of the Florence Senior Center now under construction at Freedom Florence. He was also the chairman of the Florence County Election Commission. When asked a few years ago why he volunteered for such a thankless job, he responded that when the people of Florence County cast their vote, he wanted to be sure that everything reasonably possible had been done to ensure a fair, honest election, since elections are the foundation of our democracy and democracy the foundation of our freedom. During retirement he has also served as a representative in the Silver Haired Legislature of South Carolina. Mr. McCown was proud to be related to John McCown who served in the Revolutionary War and to President Jefferson Davis. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Charles D. McCown II and Robin Fernandez McCown and their child Charles D. McCown III of Atlanta, and son and daughter-in-law Dr. J. Samuel McCown and Dr. Heather Funke McCown of Florence, and their children J. Samuel McCown Jr. and Sarah Catherine McCown, and brother Charles T. Johnson of Effingham. The visitation for Mr. McCown will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at other times in the home of Dr. J. Samuel McCown, 2856 Hermitage Lane, Florence. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at First Baptist Church with interment at Elim Baptist Church in Effingham. Mr. McCown wished for memorials to be made to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of S.C., P.O. Box 11159, Columbia, SC 29211 or New Life Rescue Ministries, P.O. Box 7129, Florence, SC 29502.
