It is always difficult to prove that a person did not exist. However, if one does a search on FamilySearch for a man named Charles E. Bonwell, born 1790-1794, d Iowa 1886, there is only one hit for Charles, and that is for (15 Dec 2014) the original version of this F.A.G. memorial. No Charles Bonwell born 1790-1794 shows up in a search of RootsWeb/WorldConnect (15 Dec 2014). When one does a search of HeritageQuest for census entries for people named Bonwell in Butler Co, IA, there are familiar names, including those of Shadrach and his wife, Amanda, who are buried in Lynwood/Lynnwood Cemetery. In the 1860 census, with them is a son, Charles E., age 6, born in OH. That would make Charles born abt 1853-1854. He, again as Charles E., is also with his parents in the 1870 census, age 16. This same son, except for the fact that his middle initial now looks like a C. and is so-indexed by HeritageQuest, is still with his parents and still in Butler Co in 1880, listed as age 25. Then he seems to disappear from census records, which would be consistent with a date of death of 22 June 1886. So, if one returns to FamilySearch and allows for the C/E variation in the middle initial but searches for a Charles Bonwell born 1852-1856 in OH, one finds (15 Dec 2014) the same 1860-1870-1880 census records but no later census records, no marriage record, no death record. If one does a search on FamilySearch for genealogies instead of records, there is (15 Dec 1014) one Internet tree listing a Charles Edwin Bonwell as son of Shadrach and Amanda with a date of birth of 1863 (no month and day specified) with this note as to source: "BIRTH: Information from Marian Bonwell, wife of John Bonwell, III (supplied by Chris Pasek). Her cite is a descendant of Shadrach Bonwell." Note that the "1863" date of birth is inconsistent with the census entries from 1860-1870-1880 and must be disbelieved. Should the middle name be believed? The preponderance of evidence available suggests that the tombstone in Lynwood Cemetery is for the same Charles E. Bonwell, son of Shadrach and Amanda, who was in the 1860-1870-1880 census records, despite the age at death of 92 listed for him in the list of Lynwood burials. Note that this Charles and the mother Amanda are both buried in "P 10" of the cemetery. There is no reason yet (15 Dec 2014) to disbelieve the 1886 date of death. If, instead of being 94y, 9m, 20d old when he died, he were 34y, 9m, 20d old, then his year of birth would be 1851, which is too early to be consistent with the census records. Obviously there could be more than one error in the reading of the age at death and/or more than one error in the date of death. It would seem that the best we can do is to use for now the 1886 date of death from the reading of the stone and then estimate the year of birth as 1853, which would be consistent with his age of 6 in the 1860 census (the first census in which he was listed, therefor considered by some to be the next best substitute for a birth record) as well as with the 1870 census and 1880 census. Suggestions would be welcome from anyone who can cast a light on this.
