Charles was born on August 17, 1924, in Deepwater, MO, the son of Marion and Myrtle (Wolfe) Dean. He was raised on a farm in rural Polk County near Humansville and graduated from Flemington High School. After initially receiving a farm deferment, Charles was drafted and served in the U.S. Army (1st Infantry Division) in World War II, where he received a Purple Heart and other service awards. He met his future wife, Jane Boswell, in Humansville through mutual friends. They were married March 25, 1947. Shortly thereafter they bought a farm east of El Dorado Springs where they have lived for the past 68 years. To their union four children were born. Charles was baptized in 1965 in the creek on their farm by the Roscoe Christian Church minister. Charles worked hard to support his family by baling hay, raising and selling livestock, milking cows, and driving a school bus for the El Dorado Springs school district. He was proud of having saved enough money to take his family on three cross-country vacations in the 1960s. Many family memories were made on those trips. Charles enjoyed writing original poems, songs, and stories. He also completed a self-published memoir recounting his WWII experiences called I Fought With and For the Big Red One. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers: Garland L. Dean and Kenneth D. Dean. Survivors include his wife Jane of the home; four children: Larry Dean and wife Jackie of Springfield, MO, Vicky Standart and husband Ron of Kansas City, MO, Don Dean and wife Marlene of El Dorado Springs, MO, and Kathy Brandon and husband Bob of Moberly, MO; five grandchildren: Jason Dean and wife Wayna, Jackie Lee Dean and wife Heather and family, Brian Dean; Audrey Brandon, and Lydia Brandon; nephew Roy Boswell and wife Coleen; and many other family and friends. Funeral services for Charles Dean were held on Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Bland-Hackleman Chapel, with David Studer officiating. The Greathouse Singers provided music. Burial followed in Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jason Dean, Jackie Lee Dean, Brian Dean, Ron Standart, Bob Brandon, and Roy Boswell.
