Description	:	Charles E. Hansel, 84, of Elkader, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at his residence following a long illness. He was born March 4, 1925, in Greeley to Fredrick and Cora (Hyde) Hansel. Hansel, 84, of Elkader, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at his residence following a long illness. He was born March 4, 1925, in Greeley to Fredrick and Cora (Hyde) Hansel. (Funeral: Elkader,IA Peace United Church of Christ) He was raised and educated in the Littleport and Garber area. Charlie served in the United States Army from May 1943, until he was honorably discharged in January of 1946. He was a longtime member of the Elkader American Legion Post #106. Charlie started his career working at Allen Motor Company in Elkader; then he and his brother Paul "Peck" Hansel went into business together, starting Hansel Brothers Shell station, also in Elkader. Charlie later purchased the business from his brother, and named it "Charlie's Shell", which he owned and operated for thirty three years. Following the sale of his business, he worked for Minard Motors in Elkader for a few years. He then worked as a bus mechanic for the Central Community School District in Elkader until his retirement. Charlie loved to play cards, go camping, trapshooting and watching the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed driving a team of ponies. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Kuhse on April 2, 1948, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Three children were born to this union. Mary Lou died in 1982. Charlie and Meralda "Babe" Vorwald were married on June 3, 1983, in Nashua. Survivors include his wife Meralda "Babe" of Elkader, daughters, Lynn (Dennis) Schaefer of Elkader, Lori (James) Bunting of Edgewood; step-daughters, Nancy (David) Dennler of Elkader, Kim Vorwald of Elkader; two step-sons, Kevin (Roxi) Vorwald of West Union, Randy (Janeane) Vorwald of Elgin; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grand-children; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Carmen (Del) Palmer of TX, Iola (Richard) Krapfle of Dubuque, Jean (John) Maehl of Elkader and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Lou; son Charles; two brothers, Don Hansel and Paul Hansel and one sister, Hilda Harris. Leonard-Muller Funeral Home handled arrangements.
